Why are SLS Roadsters loosing value?

Any ideas I thought they might hold and eventually go up?

I would think the Gull Wing coupes will retain value better than the roadsters. This is why the price for coupe cars are on par with roadsters. The Coupe will become more collectible later on. The gull wing is such a cool and unique feature that the convertible doesn't have.

Because of the doors. Also, it has a soft top as well. I think when you combine those 2 factors people would much rather buy the coupe with Gull Wing doors.

Same goes with the original 1950s 300SL. The gullwings are more collectible than the convertibles, and those have been more expensive.

SLS values are still falling (Coupes and Rdstr)

There are half-dozen coupes in $130K range; dozens $140K range and only thing selling over $150K is <3K miles.

Again NO ONE pays dealer ask / list price. Opening call to any dealer will be heard with -10% discount offer all day long. So do the math.

3yrs ago today actually, I was told I will "never find a SLS Gullwing under $130K unless it has 75K miles...."; well we have 6 with under 25K miles now.

10 yr old Exotics all hit a floor in valuation; AMGs in particular.

I saw this roadster on craigslist the other day for under $100k. I think this was the first car I ever saw, coupe or roadster, under $100k. https://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/c...766424814.html
Definitely the roadsters lose value faster than the coupes, undoubtedly due to the doors. These cars are still on the depreciation curve, more so the roadsters if you take account the fact that they were more expensive than the coupe when new. Hopefully that will turn around.

And sorry to say but Mercedes is just as stupid and US manufactures. Get a good looking car and what do ya do with it? Price it out of touch for normal people, and then just stop making them because you didn't sell a bunch of them at first. I likely will never buy a new car since no one knows how to style a car any more. I love the gull wing roof lines, and hate all the curved circle roofs that just about all cars that are made now have, its ugly and it is not a good aerodynamic feature.

That dealer is super sketchy. They had a Nissan Skyline R33 GTR for sale... I was inquiring on it but they could not answer questions on it. Also, many of these cars are beat pretty bad.

I suspect it is the availability of GT convertibles. Impossible for this car to not be sucking demand from SLS market

Thumbs up SLS Roadster/GW Depreciation

I have owned a SLS roadster for about 13 months. I absolutely love the vehicle. My long term ownership experience is with the 300SL RO & GW. As a kid in the '50's & early '60's, there was a MB dealership a few blocks from my grade school in Washington, DC. I put together models, went to MBCA events, dreamed of owning a 300SL in the future. As medical student at UCSF in the 1970's, our Chairman of Surgery, the late Paul Ebert MD, drove 1961 300SL RO to work each day. He recommended that I buy one, however the price of $5000-, might as well have been $1M-, as I had no $$. In 1987, I was able to get one for about $60K, & owned one for 31 years. I sold it at the Gooding Auction at Pebble Beach, as the buyer paid $2.53M. What made the ownership special for all of those years was membership in the GullWing Group, an organization dedicated to the 198 series 300SL's produced from 1954-1963. For my 1st 3 years of ownership, market values soared. In 1990-1991, the market crashed, and values plummeted. Because I believed in the car long term, & because values of lesser cars & greater cars are crunched together in a bad market, I upgraded to the 300SL of my dreams in 1997. My big mistake was not keeping both. Obviously the market recovered, & the rest is history. 300SL GW's were only models eligible for full membership when GWG was founded in 1961. RO's became eligible for full membership a decade or more later. Although I am biased, I believe it to be the best car club in the world. There is of course a chat line, a great magazine, annual conventions, a rally, tours of the best car collections in the USA & abroad, etc, etc. I had planned to attend the convention with my SLS this year, however a trip to the Formula 1 race in Singapore, got in the way. 5 SLS's were on display, with the vintage GW's & 300SL RO's. The SLS is the descendant of the original GW. I consider the SLS a special gift from MB. They are great cars which are far more affordable. I strongly encourage SLS owners to find a home in the GWG. The SLS can be celebrated, enjoyed, driven, & treasured by a group which believes in long term ownership & appreciation. While I loved my vintage 300SL Roadster, I miss it far less due to my SLS. I will at the GWG Convention in 2020, SLS owners come & join me!! When I joined the GWG in 1987, in similar condition, GW sold for perhaps 2x as much as RO's. Ro's caught up eventually, & passed the GW, excepting the rarest variants. Drive your SLS, enjoy it, & be patient. The spectacular nature of the SLS will not go away. If you are determined to get appreciation , buy the SLS BS! If you want best bang for the buck, get a RO. You can't go wrong with a GW!!

I love your attitude & photos. When I figure out how to post photos, I send some up. Although I live on the East Coast, Our family home was in LA for 40 years. I have fond memories of drives in my 300SL RO in the SF Bay Area, on the PCH & Sunset Blvd, & in Palm Springs.. I shipped it to California for several GWG Conventions & to show it at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. When I sold it in 2018, there was an empty stall in my garage which had been filled for 31 years with a 300SL. When I attended the GWG Convention in 2018 with only a rental car, A member let me put 100 miles or so on his spectacular SLS RO! I ultimately got quality drive time in SLS GW & RO, as well as SLR Coupe & RO. While the SLS RO was my favorite, all were great. You have undoubtedly seen photos of mine. The rights to purchase the 1st SLS RO delivered to a customer the USA were auctioned at the Boca Raton Concours in 2/11. Auctioneer was Jay Leno, & buyer was owner of DuPont Registry Magazine, who got to order/spec it. It arrived in late 2011 & appeared on the cover of the January 2012 issue. It was used as a corporate car by DR for years, & had 3300 mile on it when I bought it in 2018. It is Alubeam Silver with red top & leather, 10 spoke wheels, carbon fiber trim, B&O stereo, red brake calipers, car cover, Alcantara steering wheel, etc etc. I was able to get 6 year extended warranty as well as wheel & tire warranty at time of purchase. I only drive it when the weather is good & the sky can be the roof! I more than doubled the milage in the 1st year, & rang up 99.5 points at the MBCA Middle Atlantic Concours d'Elegance last summer while parked in between a vintage 300SL RO & GW! As noted above, I am very comfortable with long term ownership, & this baby is a keeper. My 300SL was the last built & delivered to a customer in the USA, & my SLS was the 1st. From last to 1st, what a fun ride!!! My SLS will get to the LA Beaches & I will track you down!

Hi,

A new owner of a SLS Roadster so interested in this discussion. I am in NZ and I think there are maybe only 3 here. NZ has a lot of Ferraris and, of course of more lately, McLaren. The SLS just didn't sell here very well. I have brought the car for (in part) because of investment potential. I estimate there were only circa 300 RHD Roadsters produced globally. What really drove me were a couple of other factors.
1. The engine.
2. First and only NA V8 fully AMG designed and built ever, will never be another.
3. The alum construction.

These were the big ones. I get the GW argument but there were a lot built, way more than Roadster. The engine is a huge factor because as performance completes moves to hybrid or, god forbid, electricity the collectibility will increase, it has to! The UK is a big end destination for NZ cars and not many roadsters turned up there. Brexit has softened the market there so I am very happy about the price I paid.

I haven't even seen the car yet, nor driven one. I have had a range of cars before including Ferrari etc. I was thinking about a McLaren but this SLS is in effect my first proper investment car imo. The rest will depreciate unless very special editions like Challenge Stradale, Scud, Speciale, cars of those ilk from a range of manufacturers. Not a Pista.

But my feeling is the SLS, both variants, will be in this group(maybe not the CS!!).

Car turns up next week, black with 2 tone interior, black and red. That little carbon surround on the console. Stock/base wheels. Steel brakes which I am fine about even though I will put this around the track a little. Then again maybe I will hate it

Hello JS NZ, My strong suspicion is that you will love your SLS Roadster! The engine is spectacular and can be tweaked if you need more power/torque. Hopefully you will receive a copy of the book describing its development & heritage. A copy was delivered by the factory with each SLS, however , it seems that some copies have been separated from the cars. I also liked the aluminum construction as compared to the carbon fiber in the SLR. My understanding is that if the body of your SLR is tapped by another vehicle, an electronic message is sent to McClaren, which then become part of the permanent record of your ownership! I spent much of an afternoon chatting with the designer of the SLS at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in 2018. I was most impressed.
