Smile 1951 Mercedes-Benz 220 W187 Cabriolet A

Hi all! I'm Alex Wongchuking. I'm a newbie here. I'd just like to share a family heirloom - my father's 1951 Mercedes-Benz 220 Cabriolet A. This is based in Manila, Philippines and parts for cars this old are somewhat harder to come by.

I'm pretty much the only car guy around the family so I took upon the task of restoring and maintaining this 220. It's never been in any minor or major accident - save for the usual dings and scratches. This car was kept in tiptop condition by my father and I did so as well. We keep this running every other day for a few kilometers/miles or so to keep the parts moving.

Some parts have been replaced over the years such as the steering wheel, lights rims and other trims especially in the interior. Of course, we had to keep it original that's why it was all cosmetic parts were ordered via MB Germany. Underchassis is rock solid and some of the parts that could no longer be found were re-made by a trusted machine shop although as much as possible, if an original part can be had, that's what we obtained. Also, the paint had to be washed over that's why it has its shiny sheen.

Most of the major work done on this car was finished around three years ago.

Some pending work that have to be done right now is the leather ceiling which has already cracked. I intend to replace it with top-grade leather once I find a good shop here.

Many Benz collectors have offered to buy this from us but we do not intend to sell it. There's already a "succession plan" for who will maintain this car in our family.

The sentimental value of this car to us is priceless because it reminds us of our father as a dedicated, hardworking, resourceful and persistent businessman AND this 220 was his buddy. I'd just like to share to everybody that this 220 has seen its fair share of adventures because my father personally saw every step of his manufacturing business which includes manning the sales rounds in the Philippines during the 1950s-70s wherein the road network was characterized as unpaved. For this car to be "used and abused" then kept and preserved in its current condition truly a testament to the kind of ingenuity that the 3-pointed star brand has.

I'll also be taking pictures of the interior once I find the time as well.

My father has two other Benzes, a 1960 model 300d and a 1970 280s which I'll be posting in my blog soon.

Just to add, here's a 5-second video of it with the engine running:

Pardon the video, though.
