W210 MAF (mass air flow) sensor failure
Probably addressed in the past, but my extended warranty on my '00 E55 is up in six months, and I would like to apply some preventative maintenance if necessary. For those of you sporting W210 99 - 02 E55's, how serious is the issue of MAF (mass air flow) sensor failure? Is this issue more prevalent on a specific year W210 E55? Researching the forum, some have designated this issue as "common." When one says "common" does this imply over 50% of W210 99 - 02 E55's? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Air Flow Meter
Air flow meter failure on 210 models seems to be around the 60k mark.
A friend of mine who is a mechanic at a main dealer confirmed this for me. He stated that they change at least 3 every week on 210's and they are all around the 60k mark. Air flow meter failure does not seem to be specific to the 210 model only, if you do a search on this site and some of the British ones you maybe suprised. |

Air flow meter
That's a difficult one.
Preventative maint is a good thing, but buying a part because it might go wrong could work out expensive. You could be lucky and it will last, however the part is not that expensive and you will notice it when it is breaking down. Save your cash. |
If it ain' broke... Think I'll wait for dooms day, and DIY.

It is not a big deal. $200 bucks and 20 minutes with a screwdriver, and that if you have never done it before.

Yes, MAF is easy to replace.... you may not even need a screwdriver.
I'm in Bay Area and I just replaced the MAF on my '01 E55. Let me know if you need help.... or you could just simply drive down to my place and I can help you replacing it. |
Just curious... how do you diagnose a MAF failure? Does it throw any codes?

My 02 has 65k miles and my Maf is ok and car runs incredibly strong and fast.
Don't replace what's not broken, this is my advice. MAF has nothing to do with preventive maintenance. |

The transmission felt rough during the first couple days after the MAF was replaced... but it cured by itself (the computer may need to adjust the shift :nix: ). |
