After Market Stereo in 1999 E55

I am looking to replace the factory HU with an Alpine CDA-9887. I am not too knowledgable about the original factory system or the DS2 bus.

I assume that if go with the aftermarket head unit, I will have to replace the amp as well. Does anyone know how many channels the Bose amp is in this system?

If anyone as installed a CDA-9887 in a W210 E55, I would be interested to hear the details of the install and what I should look out for. I plan to have the new system professionally installed, but want to do research on the amps before the installer digs into the car.

Thanks.

Use a PAC OEA-2 to hook up the head unit to the Bose amp...that will enable you to reduce the gain on the head unit...if not you will be at full volume when you turn your system to about a 1/4....use VW Metra #70-1784 for the connections...here is pinouts for the factory to VW harness...

1 (was green/black VSS speed sense wire before 2000, now tucked under passenger door sill "cable gutter" after 2000 update. VSS now over CANBUS.)
2 gray wire--diagnostic connector pin 33
3 black/yellow wire--mute the radio as soon as you connect it to ground (telephone mute)
4 red/white--constant 12V just like your diagram
5 blue/white--remote turn on lead just like your diagram
6 empty
7 empty
8 brown--ground wire just like your diagram
CANBUS (brown and brown/red wire in C connector)

The speaker wiring matches the VW Metra harness exactly. Pin numbers can be seen on the connector where the female plugs are. Here it is for reference:
1 Right rear + = Purple/Black
2 Right rear - = Yellow/Black
3 Right front + = Yellow/Black
4 Right front - Yellow/Brown
5 Left front + = Green
6 Left front - = Yellow
7 Left rear + = Brown/Red
8 Left rear - = Brown

Thanks for the input. How are max audio levels once this is done? Also, does this solution allow me to totally bypass the fiber optic issues?

Thanks.

Thanks Peter. I don't know much about the architecture of the D2B, so I wanted to make sure that there was no fiber optic connection between the amp and the HU.

Sounds to me like replacing the head unit with an aftermarket HU, while keeping the stock Bose amp and speakers is not to much of a problem.

Ken , Follow Tacjam instructions and you will be fine, He helped me a great deal with my installation. I just finished installing an ALpine W205 recently and it went great, as long as you dont want to use the OEM changer you will be fine hooking up to the BOSE amps, you just have to raise the volume a bit more than usual because of the different gain setting . Cheers,
Max

One thing I forgot to mention, you're going to need an Antenna adapter...you'll bypass all the fiber optics which is used for the factory phone and CD changer. The CDA 9887 has Bluetooth capability...I took apart the Alpine Mic and installed it in the factory location...a dab of superglue holds it in place (on the edge) Also..I installed a 160gig ipod in the upper armrest where the factory phone was. With 50,000 songs on tap...who needs a CD changer! The reason for the PAC OEA-2...you factory bose amp expects a 2-ohm signal..your Alpine head unit has 4 ohm pre-outs..for that reason your going to have to use PAC OEA-2 line level outs...

Max...do you have pics of your system? Did you get the Steering wheel controller from Europe? The W205 looks perfect in the W210...it really cleans up the center console...no more 20 buttons from command....the screen real estate doubles the factory command!

here is my setup in my 2000

Jim , I followed your instructions and everything went great thank you so very much. I am waiting to replace the defective PAC Video by pass that I received , it took me forever to figure out why there was no video finally found out the PAC was bad. As for the Steering wheel controls, couldnt find a Euro seller willing to ship to the US yet, but thats next. PIcs will be up soon . Thank you again.
Cheers,
Max

Jim

Jim, It took me while because of course I had to do it the NOT SO EASY way! I wanted the W205 up higher, so I had to relocate the HVAC into the ashtray, extend the wires ,surgically dremel the front of the ashtray to accept the HVAC control, routed the Mic & wire into the center AC vents, and
installed the mic center of vents...very OEM ...God forbid I should do anything the easy way ... but I am very happy , pics will be up soon.
Net step is, dynamat all the doors, and floors, maybe the trunk NOS ADS amp in the back and , NOS ADS PX upfront and Morel 2X8 subs in stock location in the rear! Never a dull moment!
