E55 with Speedshift, Paddles, M Mode and other Mods

Hi tehre,

several Months ago i had some Questions about 55K Camshafts in the NA 55 Engine. I tought a new thread would be fine to introduce myself ... finaly ... after getting the damn Speedshift Gearbox to work! :naughty:

My Name is Fabian, i am from Germany and 33 years old. I love to drive Mercedes, besides my E55 i own a W123 280TE and a W123 200T. My Brother and I also take care of his W109 300SEL 6.3.

My Car is Originally a E430 Station ... we replaced the Engine with a AMG 55 N/A, made some Softwareupgrades, Exaust Mods, Camshafts and after all switched the Transmission from 722.636 to AMG Speedshift 722.643! Therefore the rear axle has to be switched from 2.82 to 2.65. The car has aprox 400PS without any sign on it ... the sound makes it a little obvious that it is not a 220CDI but on the "Autobahn" most of the fast cars are looking a little confused when you pass them with 280km/h :)

some other Mods where made:

- C55 W203 Breaks
- Eisenmann Rear exaust
- no resonator
- rear race cats
- Brabus Steeringwheel with E63 W212 Shifting Paddles
- REAL "M" Mode instead of the "Winter" Drivingprogram
- Bilstein B8 absorbers on the front
- H&R Springs for a lower ride.
- Carlsson Wheels
- H&R Stabilisators front and rear
- of course no V/Max restriction.

i also have made some good pics and vids of my car ... in germany everyone is a picture fanatic, maybe in the states also, so here you go ... some pictures of my "sleeper".

Very nice car:y

Dan04mcs 09-15-2013 10:33 AM

Wow!
Nice Car :y

How hard was it to swap the 5.5 ?
Would be very interested in the details.

Thank you for sharing.

kaype 09-15-2013 11:30 AM

Hi there...

thanks! :)

the swap CAN be easy. If you get a donator from the same Modelyear.

My E430 was build 06/2000 ... the Donator E55 was 03/2001. From 07/2000 Mercedes used the ME2.8 ECU instead of the older ME2.0 ECU in my E430.

We had to completly rebuild the cable harness because ME2.0 and ME2.8 is NOT compatible. also we had to switch den EPS/BAS Control Unit and all Sensors of the ESP. Also not compatible is the O2 Sensor from ME2.0 and ME2.8!

So ... if you swapt a ME2.0 (Any E55 from 1997 until 06/2000) with a simalar one ... this is no big deal, espacialy when the basecar is a E430. Engine out, Engine in ... FUN! Also you had to switch the Transmission ... E430 has a 722.632, E55 has a 722.636. But in most cases Engine and Transmission is one Unit to change ;)

If you have a car from 07/2000 search for a similar E55. When the Cars have a digital speedometer ... they have a ME2.8. If no digital Speedometer in the menu ... ME2.0!

Thanx Kaype

I've always wanted a W210 E55 Wagon.
The idea of a hot rod wagon is hard to resist.

Hmmm, winter project..........

ML63 AMG 09-15-2013 12:24 PM

Please do a writeup on the paddles!!!

kaype 09-15-2013 02:12 PM

Nothing special about it. Unfortunatelly the W210 does not have any preperations for paddle in the steering wheel. so i bought E63 Paddles and mounted them to my steeringwheel ... at least a was A LITTLE nervous to cut in my Brabus Steeringwheel *sic*.

Next step was to get the signal from the paddles to the shifter. Therefor is used a radio controlled 2-way switch like any garagedooropener ... with 2 relais on the receiver. I soldered the relais outputs to the switch inside the shiftunit and voila ... it works! :) The Paddles are solderd to the senderunit wich is hidden in the steering wheel.

The latency is a few milliseconds ... so no problem. it was a little tricky to find the exact switchingtime of the relais ... i now got something like 80-100ms ... this works great. Original the Relais switched 500ms but this allways shiftet two gears :(

Only problem could be the battery in the sender ... i got a sender with a 12v miniature battery that should take several years ... depends on how much you shift ... actually i shift a lot :D

Do you have any dyno charts to support the 400 hp?

kaype 09-15-2013 06:12 PM

No ... until now i have not, but i have a "stock" E55 W210 from my parents ... compared to mine it drives like a E320 to a stock E55.

The Tuner who chipped and v-maxed my car had dynos from similar cars resulting in 375 to 380 HP. Then the Camshafts came in, the complete Exhaust manifold where changed (Eisenmann, deleted resonator and race cats) what makes me say that i should have aprox 400hp. IŽd like to do a dyno run but unfortunatelly i have no dyno nearby, my plan is to change the headers and do a dyno after that.

makes no sense for me to do a dyno before :)

greetings, Fabian

BlownV8 09-15-2013 06:36 PM

You should always dyno before and after each modification to determine worth of mods.

kaype 09-15-2013 06:38 PM

Dynos in Germany are very rare ... i have to drive about 120km to the next one ... and 1 dyno run will cost around 100 Euro ... i think dynos in America are a lot mor common then in germany :(

Pauljay 09-17-2013 03:45 AM

Hi Kaype.

I've done an engine swap like you but I used my 430 transmission. It all works very well! I am trying to do the paddle shift mod, I have done the blue solinoid mod for faster shifts. My aim is to get the paddle shift and true M mode like yours!

My Engine ECU is 2.0 and my TCU is EGS51. I have another TCU which is EGS52 which I checked was the correct one but the car doesn't accept the part.

How did you get your EGS52 to work?

kaype 09-17-2013 04:04 AM

What do you mean with "doesenŽt accept the part"? DoesenŽt the engine start or what exactly is the problem?

EGS52 with ME2.0 should be no problem, my E430 with ME2.0 also was upgraded with a EGS52... worked fine.

Only thing you have to do is the correct coding of the EGS52. You need to programm the model and type of car. For a E55 W210 this would be 210074 or for a S210 210274 with the variantcoding 030 (AMG Version) ... in a W210 this should work without any problem. E430 and E55 have the same rear axle ratio ... so no further action needed.

BUT: The E430 Transmission IS SLOWER then the E55 Transmission. You should first of all change the Transmission. The 722.632 only have a 5-part Clutch, the 722.636 AMG Transmission has 6!

After my Engine Swap i had 2 Weeks the 722.636 in my car, but it was wrecked by the Engine :D ... so i reinstalled the 722.632 i still got from the E430 Engine and let the ECU still in believe of a 722.636 ... this works out fine until you do a kickdown and the engine wants to shift gear at 6200+ rpm, the transmission is to slow so the engine runs into its governed speed and starts to stutter.

So as long as you have the 722.632 Transmission DO NOT CODE the EGS52 to a E55! This will not work very well.

I coded my EGS52 to E430, this works well ... and started to search for a spare transmission, i found the 722.643 from an SL55 ... this was the beginning of my M Mode Dreams :D

Pauljay 09-17-2013 05:38 AM

Thanks for the quick reply!

I forgot to mention you have a very nice, very clean car. Needs window tinting though!..:)

The problem I have is the car doesn't start. I found a small garage that uses S.T.A.R machine and he says he cannot see/car doesn't recognise maybe the new EGS52!

I think maybe I have the wrong unit until I checked on EPC and it said that my one was from 2000+ model. The part number I have is 030 545 23 32. which did you use?

I was hoping to keep my 430 transmission as since I did the 'blue top' upgrade the gears shift twice as fast, although the AMG box has 6 part clutch I'm wondering how much difference it wil make?

Thanks for the coding I'll show my Tech.

kaype 09-17-2013 05:49 AM

The Partnumber should fit a W210 E55.

You need a Star Diagnosis to code the model and type of car. THIS HAS TO BE 210074 or 210274 (doesent matter)

This Unit was also used in W203, if there is still a W203 Model and Type coded the car wont start! If you cant find anyone who will code this for you, send me the unit over ... germany <-> england isnt that far :)

What do you mean with "blue top" Upgrade? :)

i compared the whole 722.632 transmission with the 722.636 and only found this difference. 732 uses 5 discs in the clutch "K1" and "K2", 636 uses 6. Also K3 is differnt, 632 had 4 Discs, 636 uses 5!

Pauljay 09-17-2013 06:02 AM

I see!

I got the part off Ebay thinking it was plug and play. It must have original coding still.

In later AMG gearboxes from '05 the solinoids in the gearbox were changed from brown to blue.

The gear change becomes faster and firmer. The part is a Maybach part.

Search my posts for more info!

Thanks Fabian for the offer of coding for me! I will see my Tech to see what he can do..

I believe I can still use my 430 transmission to get the manual shift once the EGS52 has been coded, this will save me Ł2000 for transmission and labour to fit!

Thanks again!:y

kaype 09-17-2013 06:08 AM

Hmn ... for M Mode you need a Transmission that supports this AND a EGS to. Mine is programmed to 211276 (W211 E55 Kompressor Station) with the correct Transmission 722.643 connected to it. But youŽll need the EGS from a W211, W220, W215 or R230 ... these have the M113 S/C and the 722.643 Transmission. Problem is that the W210 only fires up if the EGS is coded to W211 E55 ... dont ask me why ... coded to W220, W215 or R230 the engine wont start ... but the E55 W211 has a 2.65 rear axle ... because of this i had to switch mine from 2.82 to 2.65.

With a EGS52 coded to W210 and a 722.632 youŽll wont get any "real" M Mode. Sorry :(

Thanks for the info on the solenoids ... i will check that. Probablly i got the old brown once cause my 722.643 is from 2004.

Pauljay 09-18-2013 04:51 AM

Hi Fabian,

I've read that to get the manual mode instead of 'W' (winter) you just need a speedshift (tiptronic) transmission.

People on the C55 forum have achieved this with a EGS52 TCU and their standard box.

With my 430 box, I'll get faster gear changes, but you think I won't be able to program 'W' to manual?

With the solenoid mod this speeds up the gearbox so hopefully I won't run into trouble with kickdown at high rpm.

My gear change is fast, but I'd like faster still. I will probably change the hardware later when money isn't an issue, but for now I just need to code my TCU for W210 E55 and then I'm good to go?

kaype 09-18-2013 04:55 AM

i dont know how to "programm" this. I really see no way to do this. i installed the W211 EGS52 in my car and saw directly "Manual" in the star diagnosis ... i was really! happy about that because it was the only thing i didnt know how to solve. any car with a M Mode has a button for the programmchange (C/S/M), the 210 has a Switch...

In my case S is Standard and W is M without doing any programming or changes to whatsoever.

Interesting Fabian,,

In my W202 C55, i have Bosch ME2.0 #: "026 545 31 32",

and an EGS51 #: "026 545 75 32", with an early version of (5W 1,2,3,4) gater gear shifter,,

i contacted with many tuners, to see if able to replace it to EGS52, or can coded or reprogram it to match with a

different diff. ratios,, but unfortunate NO luck until this moment....:(

ZAYED,,

kaype 09-19-2013 03:18 AM

hmn ... we often placed EGS52 in older Mercs ... until now no problem.

but unfortunatelly i dont know any 202 with an egs52, in fact you have the old transmission without tiptronic ... what i know is that you can change this transmission against the newer ones, the only difference is the shiftlock ... after a swap old <-> new transmission you do not have to pull the break to shift as far as i know.

i really see no reason why a egs52 should not work in your car.

My 06/2000 E430 had an EGS51 swapped against an EGS52 ... with ME2.0! I can definitly say EGS52 and ME2.0 DO WORK!

greetings, Fabian

cm60k 09-19-2013 10:37 AM

I replaced my gearbox "3" month ago, from stock "722.631" 580Nm, to the one from (SL600/65 Bi-Turbo/Maybach 57S/62S),,

which is "722.649" 900Nm, and This tranny valve body comes with a "blue top solenoids",

i remove the blue solenoids & put back the brownies, cause the 1-2 shifts is very very jerking,

can’t drive the car with them,, i may need a special code to match those blue solenoids...??!!

do you suggest to put another EGS, or trying to do a new coding from Star/SDS....??

ZAYED,,

kaype 09-19-2013 12:26 PM

i would suggest to switch to a EGS52 from W220, W211, W215, R230 AMG (5.5L Kompressor M113) and code 211076 (E55 AMG W211). Then you should use the blue Solenoids. The 722.649 is also used in the CLK DTM, isnt it so?

The perfect way would then be the CLK DTM EGS with the unique Driveprogramm switching box. This should be HWA804830002 ... but if this works, dont know. In Germany i know someon who drives a S203 C55 Kompressor with Kleemann K3 and CLK-DTM Gearbox... insane car.

I will change my pressure Solenoids and the one for converter lookup clutch the next days ... my downshifting 4-3 and 2-1 is very rough. hopefully it is fine after that.

greetings, Fabian

cm60k 09-19-2013 12:51 PM

722.649 is great gearbox, and it comes in (S600/SL600/65 Bi-Turbo/Maybach 57S/62S),, but not sure if it in CLK DTM,,

i have 3.07 diff., im not sure if EGS52, from (AMGs W220, W211, W215, R230) will works, how to code it if it comes from

another models with different diff. ratios....!!??

ZAYED,,

kaype 09-19-2013 05:46 PM

No, then you have to let someone recode the EGS, this can not be done via Stardiagnosis!

That is the reason why i swaped my diff from 2.82 to 2.65, because the W211 E55 has a 2.65 diff! costs for recoding in germany are around 800 Euro (1000$) ... so i first wanted to proof everything works fine before i think about spending that money into a recoded EGS.

greetings...
