need help please tranny issue

I have yet to take into service being the weekend . As I gave it gas from the start I hear a boom and the car just coasted into neutral . When I came to a stop won't go in reverse or drive and when I went to put into park it made a grinding noise from reverse to park . So is my tranny toasted or could it be something else ?? Any help would be greatly appreciated !!!

I agree, it is a shame that people in this particular section of the forum rarely respond or care to assist.

I am no expert here, but the "boom" you mentioned and it going to neutral is not a good sign. The grinding alludes to a faulty transmission too. Has it been serviced recently? Or has it ever been serviced? How many miles on it? The 722.6 is a very robust transmission, but all must be maintained. It's unfortunate that many neglect to change the fluid, I am not insinuating this is the case on yours. This is partly due to Mercedes claiming their fluid was lifetime a while back so people took their word.

Best of luck, I wish that I could offer up more insight.

Thanks a lot man
I'm hoping it isn't a complete tranny swap but from the sound it made that's all I can think of as something blew up in there lol
Been long weekend with inlaws and a wedding so I had to let my car sit since Saturday night. Dropped it off yesterday to a Indi mechanic. He's pretty good with euro cars so I'm hoping hell be able to give me some good news .
As far as tranny service . Never been done since I owned it last 4 yrs 70k miles later
Car has high mileage and between the agressive driving basically I drive it like a grandma most time then comes the occasions where, somone wants to play but very rare . I guess it was due for something since I have barely any $$$ into it as far as repairing or having to spend a nice chunk so far

Well see later today

Man, I am sorry to hear that. I wish I could say something encouraging, but the sound(s) you heard was most likely the transmission going belly up. Dang shame. I've been putting off getting my transmission fluid flushed, but after seeing this, I'm on it this week. I've had mine going on 2 years now, and it was recommended when I got it. Hate to hear bad news, but I hope it gets better- Please keep us posted!

Did your car throw any codes ??

My trans blew up last fall when coolant got sucked into it because of a faulty radiator. So I feel your pain.

Not flushing in 70k is certainly not great for your trans, especially if the original fluid was still in there and you have even higher mileage. However it's generally not catastrophic.

Usually on the 722.6, the speed sensors go and you get erratic shifting and codes.

It sounds like the center of your trans. has shrapneled. In the center the input and output shaft join together in a coupler with a bushing or bearing depending on your build date. It is a common failure and I know of a few reputable remanufacturing shops in my area of California, doesn't help you much in Detroit. Would say you should try to find a re-builder in your area that offers at least a 3 year warranty and replace the trans. Unless you know someone that is capable?
