1999 E55 AMG Winter Wheel and Tire Clarification
Could you help solve a family debate regarding a 1999 E55 AMG?
On page 154 of the owner's manual, the winter rim size is listed as 7.5 j x 17 h 2. Is this for all four wheels or the rear only?
On the 18" AMG wheels, I measured the inner rim diameter as 16.25". A 17 inch rim doesn't seem like it would have the needed clearance for the AMG caliper.
Thanks for your input and family counseling services.

I found a set of 17's that cleared the front calipers for my winter tire setup, but my 1st pick of 17" wheels didn't clear, so the specs are key as not all 17's will clear, but some will.

I used a set of E420/430 17" wheels (same size all around) as my winter setup. Worked great with no spacers needed. You should be able to buy them fairly cheap.

IanB-- I have found the same issue. I was able to locate a set of Mercedes rims from a larger C-class, but not sure the year. These rims did fit with tolerable clearance over the AMG caliper.
MDW- below is what I was able to find.
Dritanv- open invitation to hold your hair back if you puke. I will double check the manual, but I thought I typed it correctly.
It looks tighter than it is. The rim tappers outward from about 15.5" at the hub to 16.25.

Here is the manual page
My conclusions are that certain 17s will work, rim width narrows to 17.5 because thinner tires to cut through the snow, the overall the diameter is within 2 mm of the summer recommendations, and you should install on winter tires and rims on all four wheels. I have yet to check wheel stud length that is next on my to do list.
Would love to hear input or recommendation from any certified techs out there.
