2001 CL500 AMG Sport
2001 E55

Hey everyone,

just aquired this 2001 E55 about 2 weeks ago on a trade deal. It’s a higher mile example but very clean and garage parked all it’s life. 207k original miles and pulls like a train.

It does need a few things fixed like control arm bushings, rear trans mount, trans fluid service, front tires, rear brakes, and there is a oil leak from the oil filter/cooler housing (o rings from what I’m reading on the forums).

So far I have done small things like new front cowl panel, power steering fluid change, spark plugs/wires, replaced broken radio ( kenwood Bluetooth), and wet sanded/buffed the headlights.

I also swapped out the front parking lights and fog light bulbs with hyper yellow halogens. I know a lot of people hate the yellow bulbs. I agree the stock bulbs are not deep yellow and more of a warm house lamp light output which I honestly didn’t like myself. So I changed to hyper yellow and I think it’s looks damn good. Changed the rear license plate lights to white led.

I look forward to enjoying this car for a long time with my family as it’s been great so far. A heavy weight highway cruiser is exactly what I needed.

Looks to be in nice shape for the mileage!

When I had my E55 I was doing daily trips from the Bay Area up to the Sac area (Lincoln) to take care of my parent's stuff. That car handled it like a champ and just ate up the miles, which was really nice when doing that drive both ways after a full day at work. The W210 E55 is a great highway cruiser.

All solid black interior with dark wood trim. Was never really a fan of the 2 tone seats that Mercedes did for these cars but I know they offered a lot of different color combinations. I had to be picky and wait for the all black interior tho.

Right on. Only reason I went for this car was becuase of how nice the interior and body are. The engine still runs perfect and transmission just needs a simple fluid and filter change soon.

I do plan on changing out the shocks and maybe springs for a lower stance to improve handling. She is kinda floaty down the road but I think that’s due to worn suspension components.

I just drove mine up to Elk Grove a week ago for some family stuff as well. I’m in SF tho but always driving my e55 around when I need to take the family somewhere.

Shock absorbers are worn out. The "float" feeling is the exact same sympton my '99; I installed new Bilsteins and it made a tremendous difference in handling and firmed up the ride noticeably. Be sure to check out the lower ball joints also.

Be advised you will need a "crow foot" wrench to remove the front upper shock nuts.

did you get the sports or the HD’s? I was actually considering the adjustable yellow konis and pairing them up with some lowering springs. Possibly H&R with some thicker spring pads.

I have not heard of a crows foot wrench. Will have to check that out. Thanks.

Sprung a coolant leak one morning on the way to work. Noticed 2 small puddles under my car. Took the car to the shop today to get an alignment done and to also find the coolant leak. Luckily I found the coolant leak and it was just the small hose that feeds to the top of the coolant reservoir. Small crack in the reservoir. Just gonna replace it and consider it a blessing.

I did get around to installing some smoked side markers to match the tail lights. I think it looks great.

Another member, DDB, had the adjustable koni and vogtland springs and he opined the mid and stiff settings were way harsh. Also said he rarely adjusted the firmness. He eventually went with Bilstein Sports and mentioned the ride improved. Some who install H & R experience sag after a while. YMMV

The HDs are made for W210s with a taller ride height (E420/430) and as a result are a bit bouncy. The sports are better for the E55. Your "float" feeling can also be from subframe mounts in the rear of the car. From good to bad condition they completely change the way the car feels going down the road. Bilstein's center in California will also rebuild your original shocks if you send them to them. It's the only way to keep the AMG-badged ones, if you care about that.

I read somewhere that they cant adjust height to compensate for lower springs. Just refurbish to the original travel. Is this true?

Thanks for the info. I will just get sports and keep the stock amg spring setup. From a lot of research over the past couple days I found that a lot of people wanted to go back to stock after lowering their car due to ride comfort. I also need to check out the rear subframe bushings. I can hear a slight clunk sound when taking off from the rear so it must be those.

Another thought I just had was just remove the stock springs and change pads to the thinnest ones available for a slight drop. Not sure what pad thickness comes stock on factory springs but if I can step them down a bit then that would be a cool way to get it a little lower.

Been thinking about plasti dipping the front grille black but I really like the chrome. So one option I have been debating is dupli color black chrome kit. Watched a couple vids and seems pretty damn cool. Then I can have a black grille that is still chrome. I think it would set it off. Might have to buy a spare front grille tho so I have a spare in case I mess it up.

yeah that’s why I’m kinda torn. I want to keep the chrome grille but still curious as to how it would look with the black chrome grille. That’s why I want to get a used spare on eBay or something so I can try it out.

MMs are the change. Its negligible at best.
