Not Once, Not Twice, But THRICE...

THE CAR STALLED!!! I know these cars have stalling troubles and mine has stalled on me once before but today...THREE TIMES! Given, I was waiting in it today and I did have it idling for about an hour due to the delay of a meeting, but three times in a day? How can this be? Heat temps were normal all day, so I don't get it. But wait, it gets worse...

I got backed into by a truck with a low hitch and took a somewhat significant hit. My middle lower grill was torn off and there was a little damage to my radiator. I'll be taking it into the shop this week and I don't know if it will need to be replaced/repaired or not because the damage doesn't seem too significant. Your guys' opinions would really help. Sorry for the poor quality. Thanks.

The channels that carry the cooling fluid are fairly thin to provide maximum heat transfer. Some of yours look to be bent or damaged. Even if they're not leaking now, subsequent heating/cooling cycles and vibration could cause a future leak. Think about the worst possible time for it to spring a leak, because that's when it'll probably happen. Wanna chance it?

3 times!!!! Wow, I thought I was the king of stalling but never more than once in a day. Did you ever have your crank sensor replaced?

Nope. Never. Haven't had a stalling problem until now. It was almost as if I wasn't giving the car enough power so it just kinda...fell asleep

No longer stock '06 E55, A3 3.2 Quattro, LRD4 HSE, R107 280SL
Definately sounds like a sensor ...

Happened recently on my .... 330 BMW ... cam sensor though - vehicle ran under powered and stalled at the lights a few times.

Sorted in 1 day by BMW. Not that expensive either.

Rgds Steve.

Ok, here's the wrap-
I took the car into the dealership today to see whats up. Im screwed. As far as the stalling goes, I'll be taking it into the shop the week after next (next week is booked with a whole bunch of other stalling E55's ) and they'll hook it up to the Star Diag. to see what codes it throws. I also asked the service tech. if he would set the fan turn on temp to -10c and he said its not a problem. As far as the IC goes, I'm REALLY screwed.
The service tech. gave me a generous estimate of 2 months until my IC blows a leak. At that point, he said, its a whole new world of pain. As of yet, I'm looking at about $1,800 to replace my intercooler. This may, however, be an omen...

On the positive side, this gives you an excuse to buy some new mods

You mean the heat exchanger, right?

I thought they developed a newer, more effective intercooler at Evosport. If its a heat exchanger, what the hell does that mean?

Is the damage in the pics above in the cooling system radiator or the IC heat exchanger? The actual IC is under the supercharger, so when your previous post said MB was replacing the IC, I assumed you meant the IC heat exchanger, which is behind the lower fascia.

It is the IC heat exchanger in then. At first I thought they were two different things until the service tech. referred to the heat exchanger as the IC, which made me think I was wrong. He must have just been speaking in general terms.

If it's the same kind of "stalling" I think you're talking about, there won't be any codes for the dealer to check. That's the problem.

I'll tell them to check the crank sensor then.
