Well, that's a very general question. Big as in width, height? Too many variables and you have to take into account the rear can fit larger sizes than the front. Be more specific and I'm sure we can accomodate you.

Yes, 20s are possible. Why in the hell would you want larger? The fenders are only so big. Unless you're one of those people who lift their cars to fit 26s, etc...

a few...
why dont we get specific

what is the maximum wheel size you could fit? w/o rubbing or having to shave anything down
what is the maximum wheel width you could fit on front? on rear?
and while we are at it, give the tire sizes for each...

Well, if you must know I have a C230 with 18's, and I have a gap between the top of the wheel and the fender. I don't want this happening again if I get an E55. And lowering the car is more expensive then getting a bigger size. And why is everyone so quick to judge and *****. Is it because all of you drive a Mercedes? I have one, and I don't act like this.

I have 20's

20x9 front 245/35/20
20x10 rear 285/30/20

They have only been on for a few weeks and they don't noticeably rub but I am getting that rear end wiggle under hard acceleration others have talked about, and the ride sucks compared to the 18's. I may or may not keep them on there.

going bigger than 20 might be tough for the simple fact that the right tire sizes may not be available. There aren't many tires in 21" and I think it would be nearly impossible to get 22's to fit properly.

I highly doubt you can put anythin bigger then 20's on that car. I had problems with my 20's because of the wrong tire size. But 20's are possible. The problem with the 20 was up in the front and the front only. I went with a 255/35/20 in the front and the sidewall was too tall. That made the part of the tire that touches the ground rub up againest the bolt that holds the whole control arm together. A simple change of tire sizes and it was perfect.

My old set up works for sure.
20x9R 20x10R
245/35/20F and 275/30/20R

I'm am beginning to find out that 285/30/20 will work but will rub under "hard acceleration"

If fender gap is what you are trying to avoid then lowering is actually a much less expensive resolution (especially when you consider the STAR diag lowering for the w211 55). If you get a larger wheel/tire it will not help with the fender gap, which will actually get larger.

To put it in perspective, a lowered e55 with 18's will have less gap than a non lowered e55 with 20". The best combination of course would be 19s or 20s AND lowering!!

Something like this:

Fast Cars!
20x9 Front with 245/30/20

20x10.5 Rear 285/25/20

Ideal setup, no rubbing with the correct wheels on the E55.

+1. With these wide wheels your tires will have a raked look with the tread
narrower than the outer rim, which will prevent rubbing against the fenders as
the suspension compresses. To get a more "square" looking tire, put the same size tires on 8.5 and 10" rims.
Your tire height is perfect and close to stock, 25.8" F and 25.6" R.
