Best Quality Wheels???
Ok, guys: basic "wheels" question:
What are the best quality wheel brands? I've heard of HRE, Borbet, DPE. What other brands are out there, and which ones have the best reputation? Are one or more brands better for our Beast?
Thanks
Kris Keeney

There are lots of wheels out there...
many of them are crap, even though they are ridiculously expensive. Though the design is not "new", BBS wheels have been, in my nearly 30 years in the industry, some the highest quality out there. Great finish, round, and no fitment issues. Far, far, superior to lots of these one piece sand cast wheels (not that there's anything wrong with that, just the execution). There's also a German tuner whose name slips my mind right now that does custom BBS applications for Benz that are fantastic looking. I'll think of it in a minute....or someone else will beat me to it. Buy anything from someone who knows what they're doing and will back them up. Pay with a credit card. Make sure you get proper hardware and that they are round, BEFORE you mount them.

There are lots of good wheels out there but a best wheel may be very hard to determine. I've had good luck with wheels made by BBS, MHT, and Forgeline. However, I think Forgeline was sold so I'm not sure how the new ownership has affected the wheels.

For multi-piece wheels you want the manufacture to use at least 6061-T6 grade aluminum with 5mm half shells and a forged center that has been engineered. HRE, Zone and several others are up to par. Unfortunately, I have seen a lot of multi-pieced wheels that are made with lesser quality materials and they pick the style with no research as to the structure of the design. If money is no object, Dymag will make you a set of Carbon Fiber wheels with a forged Magnesium centers. I think their 19” weigh in at 14lbs.

Lots of wheels out there but you can't beat the stock AMG look and ease of cleaning. Radenergie wheels are cool but there are some quality issues that are documented here. BBS LMs are SICK, rare, and expensive.

I heard from a dealer I trust that Modulare wheels were one of the best on the market. They test every single wheel for perfection and will not release any wheel that is not 100% perfect. They do not rush and will not compromise for profit. They are not cheap either.
There are many nice and top quality wheels out there. Set your budget and get the best product in your range.

Kris, there are a lot of good companies out there but do your research before you commit. I would consider used wheels because of some great deals. If you go new, I would stick with a solid company.
I think BBS puts more wheels on race cars than any other manufacturer................and I'm guessing there's a good reason.

Lightest Wheels
Just remembered: Dymag is supposed to be the lightest wheels out there. Made out of carbon fiber outer structure and forged magnesium center They make the wheels that come on the Koenigsegg CCX

I never had a problem with a BBS rim aftermarket or OEM. I had plenty of aftermarket nightmares like now with my junk MSW wheels and snows from the tire rack and their Customer Support stinks having me spend more cash to have shops mess with centering rings and balancing all at my cost. And to know the tire rack is a huge company, i am hessitant on the support you will get from any of these mail order wheel guys online who are small operators.
Hey guys look here

They have the same carbon fiber rim listed, do you think this is the manufacture and the US agent ust imports and markets under Dymag name? I am not interested in them but this may be a good lead to buy sets at a better price.

Take a gander at CCW wheels...they are fairly priced and are really well made.

Customer service is good too...something you should look for if you have questions or problems with fitment or construction.

Dymag's are expensive. I would not use Dymag's on E series cars. I think they're too delicate. I spoke to a porsche enthusiast who purchased for his 996 GT3. He says they're light but prone to slow leaks. He curbed one wheel and badly damaged the CF. He had to send back to factory to get repaired, which was expensive. He's had annoying slow leaks in the wheels, and the CF will change to a greenish color.

There are many good brands out there, but they won't all make wheels to fit our E55s. Especially if you want to stay with 18 inch wheels. In what sizes are you interested?

BBS.
Unlike wheels from most of the multitude of custom wheel assemblers that have flooded the market during the past decade, BBS wheels are still subject to the stringent TUV approval process in Germany which requires approval of the wheel and its application on a vehicle, including approved tire sizes for a particular application. As previously noted, there's a reason why most of the F1 teams fit their cars with BBS wheels.
