Price O' Gas
~$3.80 / gal (premium) and rising here in the Milwaukee burbs...over 70 bucks to fill her up today...
(I realize the folks outside the US (re Europe) have always paid dearly for the juice - but this is uncharted territory in these parts!)

Use regular then. The computer will adjust the timing to cover for the lower octane. You'll lose some hp and maybe mpg's but gain efficiency on cost. Do the mpg v. cost math and see if it reduces your cost.

The ECUs ability to adapt to MON/RON grade will be limited on the downside. At least in OZ (Euro spec) minimum fuel is premium unleaded (95 RON which, I think is 91 MON, in the USA). I would be very careful saving a dollar (or two) a tank on gas with a squillion $$$$ engine.

Fair enough! I definitely catch the price tag. The Beast has a fuel tank the same size as my Escalade! Those 20+ gallon fill ups are noticed. Of course, the gas station close to my work also still has a $50 cap on the tanks from like 10 years ago (when no one hit $50). So, you can either leave with 2/3 of a tank, or you can re-swipe your credit card. Ridiculous.
They refuse to get rid of it, so now I don't gas up there any more...

i feel your pain.. and to those bickering "u gotta pay to play", well no chit!! when the oil price hits $150+/gal and a f##kin chaos ensues, please sing the same song.
wit the declining economy & rising gas prices, already dismal resale value of 12MPG E55 will be nose diving even faster now

The gas is a real issue and a real problem. It is tiring of hearing the "overextended" or "pay to play" sayings. Sure I can pay it, sure I love my MB's (all 3) but if gas was at $3 of course I would love it. I would never use anything less than 93, because lower octanes causes problems with the systems in our cars.
Why are people on this forum trying to justify spending more money out of YOUR pocket. Sounds nuts to me. Less money spent is less money regardless if you make 100K a year or half a mil. It's money. Period.
An increase in huge jumps in any product causes issues on a large scale, and that's real. When you have fortune 500/100 corporations laying off, losing billions of dollars, and changing the structure due to gas that's a problem. What will you tell them? Hey, you gotta pay to play? Hey you got it, you can afford it? LOL.

CA prices bad too
We are over $4.00 a gallon for premium and premium in CA is ONLY 91 octane. So really we are paying premium prices for midgrade

how about this scenario. MB & BMW join forces and find alternative energy which puts hybrids to shame. you do not need a transition phase since you'll be able to recharge these vehicles on your own. All of the sudden oil is down in the pennies in a matter of few days till the news spreads to every corner. a generation of new AMG's "more efficient" ensues. some of you guys need to be more optimistic,,,we may be closer to this then we think.

I have to laugh at you guys complaining about petrol prices. GBP £104 to fill up the beast with Super Unleaded Plus 97ron! Over $200! £1.30 per litre nearly $12 per gallon. Have fun guys!

IMO your gas will reach $5-6/gallon, probably, in the next 12 months. OPEC is going to squeeze everyone. And I'm afraid that the US multi-trillion dollar debt will have very profound effects in the US and abroad. I just hope that the current crop of US presidential hopefulls have the will and power to manage the change and hopefully not at the expense of the rest of the world.
Please dont mistake my answer to your question as anti-US sentiment. Its not. Its an outsiders view. I love the place. I lived in Boston for a few years and have many dear friends in the US who my family and I visit regularly.
I'm off my soap box. But you did ask!

As my original post stated - we're just starting to see hints of the prices you guys across the pond have been paying for years...

We're at $3.70 per gallon for premium. As far as resale value goes, you haven't lost anything unless you sell your car. If you're worried about the high gas prices but still want performance,
