It's time!! VRP700 VS MHP. Tuner showdown at Sacto. 10/25/08
 

Sorry for the hype. Goes with my business I guess.

Okay, long story short. There aren't a lot of times that everything comes together for me to make it down and this weekend just fell into my lap. Really don't think it is going to happen Nov/Dec.

I issued the challenge to MHP a few weeks ago that I really didn't think he could top my VRP700 tune and Andy didn't seem too bothered by it and accepted the challenge.

I received the tune and the only big difference I can feel right now is the off the line pull of the MHP. It seems much more aggresive off the line yet up top both tunes seem about equal.

Victor and Vadim have both been scratching their heads as they both said the VRP tune nearly pulled the tires (or felt like it) down at sea level. Perhaps it is the tune acting weird up here at 4300ft.

Only one way to settle this for sure. Down to Sacto Raceway I go for the test n tune of both tunes Saturday 10//25/08 Noon to 4pm. (I have 2 ECUs)

Not really gonna be an honest and true test as once I make a run with one tune, the car will be piping hot but sure is gonna be fun.

We flipped a coin up here and the VRP tune will go first. I will be running a mix of 93 and Sunoco 104 and will drive each tune (long as Sacto allows me out) for about 30 miles or so to get it used to sea level and then we will just see what happens.

Lots of factors so it sure won't be a perfect comparison.

DA at noon will be around 900ft and then rises bout 300-500 ft each hour. Again car will be hot with each run but will try to cool the best I can.

Always the Sacto factor. It's drag car test day so please God let them have at least scraped the friggin track. If it's a skating rink, we're shot anyway.

Famoso is not running Sat and Infineon is out as well so is Sacto or nothing for me.

If anyone wants to come out and watch, I will see you there. Won't have anyone to work the vid so if you wanna volunteer, that would be great.

Not gonna set any records of course, but we finally will see what the VRP700 can do and of course FINALLY see what an MHP tune will do at the track on a 55.

Last minute so I understand if we can't get anyone out. I will post slips regardless. I can ask the locals standing there to work the cam, hopefully they don't walk off with it. :eek:

If the track is even half way decent, should be fun.

FYI sacramento is a dirty track so the numbers won't be great. The head to head testing will be the test though. Be sure to do the ECU reset on each and whatever else you think of to keep things as equal as possible.

Jakpro1, be very careful when running your car at the sacramento track. I've been there 4 or 5 times, and every single time I was out there, the track prep was the worst I've seen :( To date, I haven't seen a track that is worse prepped than Sacramento Raceway.

The temps and DA are usually pretty good, but track prep is extremely poor. It maybe worth a while to make it to our Famoso rental coming up in December (probably on the 13th). Also, there is a Fontana event coming up in November. Track prep at Fontana is very good.

+1 with MB_Forever.. sac is sea level but horrible track prep. now famoso on the other hand is very well maintained and among the top 2 quickest tracks in CA. Fontana has turned into a nice facility but the altitude is 12 or 1300 feet above sea level and strong head wind. I vote for famoso, you will have plenty of mbworld people that wont walk away with your camera.

Things must have really changed since I ran the 11.4 down there. I honestly hooked pretty well down there but I did see the vids of guys going sideways as well.

Will take it easy and hope for the best.

Once snow socks us in up here, very hard to come off the mountains. This will be bout the only chance I get.

After hearing from quite a few people tonight I think I better lower the expections a bit and add a disclaimer.

I realize there are business reputations on the line and this test will NOT be an indicator of which tuner is "the best" or "fastest".

I guess I just wanted to try to test them both out and have some fun with the experience.

I apologize to Victor and Vadim and also MHP. I wouldn't like if someone put my product up against another with so many variables involved and potential sales on the line.

Just having some fun.

Who knows ...if Sacto is a death trap then I am just gonna lay out and catch some Cali sunshine. :D

I'd rather see datalog and dyno data.
Does the TB stay wide open all the way to red-line? What are the IATs? Where does it redline? How is the throttle mapped? What are the A/Fs accross the bands? Etc. Etc.
I hope you have fun and maybe one tune is markedly enough ahead of the other to be a clear winner. If not, imagine how we will squabble over a few tenths...;)

would be nice if one was a claer winner, but from what i hear of the track if there is only a couple tenths off from each other might be better to see as someone else said head to head dyno's and maybe some data logging to give everyone a more clear veiw.

I am putting my Renntech tune up against MHP ecu/tcu here next week on the Dyno, then on to MIR 11/15 good times :)

I actually think the 1/4 mile head to head comparison would be more effective since some items can not be measured well on the dyno, such as, shift speeds and especially proper cooling at higher speeds. But on the track, I would think the variation would be less since it'll be the exact same car, same driver, same track, same day, same conditions, etc.....

It won't necessary state which tune is better, but it'll give a very solid base for analysis :nix:

I would personally like to see more miles put on both tunes before hitting the track but obviously that's just not possible given the scenario. May the best tune win. ;) Best of luck Jim and fingers crossed for good prep.

ps--Have I mentioned how much I hate UPS?

Either way I will post my Dyno data along with the previous runs on the same sheet to give some data to look at. Better then nothing or just a butt dyno :)

Unless Jakpro jacks up the rear-end to put some mileage on, like in "Ferris Buellers Day Off" lol

sac runs some quick times. its definitely faster than infineon in sonoma. infineon has much better track prep but there is always a headwind. correct the track prep at sac is not the greatest but the d/a usually overcomes it. it is also a great track for test and tune.

cliff notes: sac is faster than infineon!

just a heads up, you can see sac speedway in many on bens videos as it could very easily be labeled his home track!!!!:zoom:
