Debadge or Not to Debadge

Okay someone hit the trunk of my car in the parking lot (God I want to strangle the person who hit my car). Dent wizzard refused to attempt to take the dent out. Now I have to a body shop and redo the whole trunk.

They quoted me $500 odd bucks if they can save the badges and $670+ if they can not. Well if you where in this position would you debadge your E55 or keep it on?

I would de-badge... as sports sedans go, I prefer a lower key approach [it's the biggest reason I ruled out the m5].

Personally, I would leave the badges on... I prefer my cars to stand out, as opposed to the low key approach. The MB cars are subtle enough to begin with... so why make them look even more boring and common.
Let's see what other people vote for. =)

By not re-badging, you may have problems when it comes to resale.

I, too, like the under the radar, stealth aspect of AMG's to begin with, but for resale I'd want the badges available (if not attached, then in my garage).

Badge it. Even with the badge, the car is low keyed. You paid extra $ for the E55 AMG, you might as well show it off. Just my two cents.

First of all, adding $170 to the bill just to stick on some letters seems high. Seems like that should be part of restoring the car to OEM condition. The right AMG trunk badge cost $39.95 at Performance Products (now on sale for $33.96). The left side "E55" should not be that more expensive. Price at your dealer the shop may be 'padding' the price.

Now about Debadging. Personnally I like the clean stealth look of debadging. I did my 98 E430 and have been thinking about doing the E55. It is a very personal decision and most people would vote no because they are into status symbols, showing off and want everyone to know what their car is or cost. I have even seen cars without any name plates or badges anywhere and look pretty cool. Debadging is a custom thing and should only be done by those with Tuned cars or those with aftermarket stuff.

You can always go badgeless for a while and see how you like it, then purchase the badges yourself and rebadge in a couple of months.

My debadged 98 e430:

add an AMG hood badge...

While you are changing your badges, why don't you install the AMG hood badge available at amgbadge@yahoo.com. It looks great on the car and is a perfect fit. P.S. this is the solid metal and fired enamel badge, not a cheap plastic one. Good Luck

OK, I'll bite.
What the heck is the significance of the hieroglyphics on the right half of the emblem?
Looks like a 1960's guitar and an oversized pick.

Leave all original badges on any car. What I hate is imitation badged up cars.

Car being fixed now. I told them to maintain or replace all the badges if needed with original ones.

Not sure if it is worth the extra money for the badges cause the other day I say two E210 with AMG badges placed on their 320 or whatever. One even put an E55 badge on? Not sure what was going on there. I was like is your E an AMG, and the dude said "yes". I guess I have alot of reseaching to do, to what clasifies a car to me an AMG.

There are Posers out there!

In 1998 I met a guy who had a 1997 E320 with an AMG Sport Package that at first he rebadged E520. DUH! Later when the E55 came in 1999 he rebadged it E55 AMG.

Enzo, my Benzo
hey there E55 owners!!

I have a W124 300E and even though I don't really "belong" in this forum, I felt the need to put in my two cents about badging since people are so quick to judge. I have a full AMG body kit on my car including the 3 piece duck fin spoiler and 17 inch monoblock II's (which I run in the winter cause they are heavy) The kit came with 2 AMG badges: one for the trunk spoiler and one smaller one for the front spoiler lip (a la C36) now I put both of them on because I paid good money for the kit and I see nothing wrong with it since it is authentic AMG gear. Just because my car doesn't have an AMG engine or suspension components (actually my suspension is more performance oriented than all pre-self leveling air suspension AMG benzes anyhow) doesn't mean I am a poser. Although I agree that it is lame to claim your car is an E55 when it is actually some E200 Turbodiesel, when performance is an issue in deciding the AMG badge debate, for the most part your cars will speak a clear language but don't be so quick to judge those who enjoy making their car look sportier because it won't taste so good when crow comes in the form of a 1990 300E that can keep up to the best of the AMG benz world. Just enjoy life and the fact that you drive some of the best cars in the world. I sure do

i agree with you if you leave teh original 300E badge on then you have every right to do so as long as you are not fooling people. Would love to see pics of your car. However, my car came from the factory with the AMG stuff but no badge so I'm not badging mine..

Keep the badging.... If there was greater visual distinction between the E55 and E320, then I would likely de-badge.

If I were to see a debadged car that otherwise looked like an E55, I would assume it was NOT one!

There are a lot of posers out there, sad to say.

Now if the E55 had graphics up and down the sides and a grab-handle spoiler, I would tend toward removing all that!

The differences in "look" between, say, a debadged E430 with AMG wheels and Sport package, and a real (debadged) E55, can often be pretty subtle, even to us MB guys!
