I was driving through b.c, when the road quickly dropped off with no signs for construction on the road, then right after i hit the step up to normal paved road with no transition. it was at night i took this photo the next day.
Gonna try and get it payed for.

the aftermath

Take more pictures or video of the road leading up to that spot to make your case that there were no signs. Good luck.

How fast were you going? Have you checked the other side for damage?

Split rim, damn I am glad you didn't loose control of the car. I wonder where that rim came from?

Wow, hellacious!
I would replace all 4, not just the one that failed. FWIW.

Sorry to hear this. Some contributors to this failure:
1) Low tire pressure
2) Speed. If speed was a factor, then I would have your suspension carefully checked. If the impace was so significant the transfer to your suspension would be very likely....err on the side of caution.
3) Cheap wheel construction
4) Hitting the brakes right at the transition point, transfering considerable weight or force to the wheels at this point.

From your pictures the road clearly has a transition there is no 90degree drop-offs or "cliffs" as we call it in road design.

What I do not understand is that Municipality or whoever has jurisdiction on the road dumped cold mix asphalt at the transition point, which worsens the surface condition for motorists.

If there are no warning signs to slow down or advise of road construction, you just strengthened your possibility for new wheels and tires.

I am involved in road design and maintenance and in my career some situations I remember where motorists had successful claims:
1) A new set of BBS wheels & tires for an E30 BMW
2) A brand new front end (steering rack, ball joints, struts etc) and tires for a Bonneville.
3) A new set of wheels and tires for a C4 Corvette
4) A set of custom wheels ruined on a slammed Nissan pick-up
5) A Caprice Classic that had similar damage to the Bonneville mentioned above

In all the above cases working with the police department and reviewing the reports it was shown that drivers were travelling excessively fast and were negligent in ignoring signs.

Which is why all our contractors carry the proper insurance and bonds, because these things happen on almost all construction projects and rather than bicker over $1000 in wheels or tires on a multi million or several hundreds of thousand roadway project our insurance claims adjuster pays the motorists for the damage sustained to their vehicle (plus it helps with public interaction and "PR").

Good luck to you and I am sure you will be treated fairly, those pictures will help you go a long way with your claim.

Yasin

Just my opinion, I would not trust the tire, even if it looks OK you cant tell what kind of internal damage the tire sustained running on the rim deflated.
The tire was never meant to survive a split rim event. Be Careful.

It was 88 km before golden coming from revy. I plan on changing all of the rims when i get home, i just got a mandrus mannhiem on it and have driven 500 km with the old tire so i assume it will be good enough to get me home.

Yasin thank you for the advice. I think the braking might have had en effect i hit them pretty hard before i hit it, i slowed down from about 95 to about 80-85 kph. It doesn't show to well in the photo but there was definitely a 65 degree angle at the least on the "transition".
