Track advise please...

Hi all,

I was at the track yesterday and my best time was 12.32 @ 112.72 with a 1.8x 60, car is running K1 only, OEM 19" with ps2's. Weather was cold and not much wind... http://www.santapod.co.uk/

My question is, can I get my ET lower than this with the current set up?

Thanks

Paul

Hey Paul,

Was this a RWYB event?

What were temps?

Trap speed seems a bit on low side but looks like you got off the line OK given your road tyres. What sizes are the road tyres?

Stock cars state side run 112-8 / sub 11 to 12.5, so I would expect you to be closer to the better side of that range rather than the other end.. thing is your 60' is not bad... so you are losing power somewhere. What was your 1/8th mile trap and time?

Hi Steve,

It was the Jap show! LOL, I always go to Jap shows + my friend was running his gtr after his rebuild.. I did not intend on running but the organisers said i could...

Tyres are 275/35/19.

I don't know what temp was but it was a cold day, the track prep was very good also.

Yeah I was thinking the trap was a bit low.. The car is very fast from a dig, and on the road is feels good at all speeds, But i do think its struggling at the top and I noticed this on the back end of the track yesterday. So what do I do??

1/8 was 89.62

Well one thing are your tyres... at 35 aspect they are quite tall so your gearing is a fair bit longer than stock.... 1.8x 60ft is pretty decent.

Your trap is very surprising... I would have expected sub 12... especially with a 1.8x 60ft

I would say cooling - check your intercooler pump, datalog the car on a long run and see what she does ...

What size pulley do you have? Or is it tune only with stock pulley? Can't remember whats in a K1...

Have you ever had the S/C shut down on you?

Hi Steve,

K1 is pulley/software, car was dynoed after and it made 527hp at the crank..

I just found a slip from my last track visit when stock, my first run was a 12.82 with a 2.0x 60 @ 108mph, folowed by low to mid 13s, thats when I had S/C shut down, MB changed pump under warranty straight after that, maybe 1k miles ago.

Actually after Mb did the pump I started to hear the cooling fan working, like when at the lights or when pulling up to my drive, I never used to hear it, I thought I would ask the tech if the system was bled and he said no, there is not need as it is a low pressure system, is that correct? Maybe this is the problem?

What system are you using for data logging?

PS, now that your car is done fancy a trip to the track? I will be there again in two weeks where the track will be open till 9pm! I would be nice to meet you and your BEAST.

I could be wrong, but I believe any stage 1 (pulley+tune) should get you around 550BHP....so you might be losing some HP somewhere.

I have been threatening to do this for a while but its such a long drive for me from Sevenoaks, Kent... its 4.5hr round trip!!! But if it stays open till 9pm could be worthwhile!

Let me know the exact dates / event and I'll try and make it... mbe my friend with his SL55 comes too...

My MB tech told me you only need to pressure bleed the V12 turbo cars and said the V8K cars do not need to be pressure bled... but need to be bled of course... not difficult to do.

The circuit is actually a high pressure one as it shares the engine coolant circuit (unless you have split yours), which then becomes a low pressure system.

I am still trying to work out for myself if a split system is better on long runs as I think the engine cooling deteriorates ... either way as soon as you add a pulley the car is stretched from a cooling perspective.

Certainly from an IAT persepctive the split system with large reservoir is the way to go...

Kleemann say up to 550hp on 55k engines, from what I understand the E55 is 470 stock, there is no way I have an extra 80hp! Or maybe I am losing power..

"either way as soon as you add a pulley the car is stretched from a cooling perspective".

Ok so this could be why the cooling fan is working harder... The car is due for its 4 year service now so I will get them to bleed the system just in case..

Santa Pod is great fun Steve even more so for us if we all go.. I live 10mins from heathrow so you could just jump on the M25 to me and then its 15 mins to the M1... 17th of this month..

Ps, with your mods you should be well into the 11s!

Gulp!!! If I do not break 12's I will be terribly disappointed...... I would hope for a sub 11.5 and walk away happy. I think you need DR's for a sub 11.5 in my opinion but having never done a formal drag race before it should be fun....

Ill be in touch

Great!

It will be hard for you, especially with all that power.. expect a 2.4 60 or above on your 1st run LOL!Oh yes its going to be fun!

DR's for sure! I found a company a here that will make me 16x9.5 to take 255/50/16 M/T it works out cheaper than ccw...

Hi, thats very good... what mods do you have when you ran 11.58?

I'm only K1, next is 82mm TB, Headers, cooling, and I now have 16inch wheels so I can go with the 255/50/16 MT. low 11s is the goal.

We should arrange to meet up at santa pod next year... Where do you live?

Where is Shakespear? Do you know of any tracks down in the south / south east?

10's are tough - NO ONE done it yet without juice... but I think there will be someone soon - I am betting on bassn07... a bit of UK v US rivalry !!!

Think minimum is 630-650 hp with drag radials for sure ... perfect weather / DA , slight tail wind and I think someone will drop in the 10's... but its all down to how you get off the line. Cars got the power for 10's - just need to get the bootie down.

You have anywhere from 490-500 stock...and 60 hp from a stage I mod is pretty normal.

More than likely if you don't have any cooling mods...only way to know for sure is to see your IATs with some sort of logging tool.

If the IATs go too high (I believe 140 degrees plus) the ECU will definitly start pulling timing to save the supercharger from overheating.

Shakes is in strafford air field and santpod is in northhamton, there are a few down south but the best is santapod,
Let me get my car ready and a few of us will go up with the other lads with e55 from the UK. i think it will be jan/ feb time and the weather has to be good.

if you get stuck for merc parts let me know as i break them for spares, and get a good discount from mercedes.
