...went a similar route (replaced motor and tranny mounts), still had a shake. Happened to be a slight leak through a gasket on the tranny that had me a quart low on fluid. Wasn't a big enough leak where it would show on the driveway or anything. Replaced the gasket and added fluid. Then, still noticed a stuttering at slow speeds. Did a compete tranny fluid replacement (took 11 liters) vs. a tranny flush (4 liters), and now, finally, the thing is smooth again and doesn't shake.

Just to add a bit: the fluid wasn't horrible, should probably have been replaced fairly soon anyway, and the magnet didn't collect any metal shards, so I was happy about that, but the tranny filter was a bit clogged, so that may have been the main problem.

Looks like you yanked all the exhaust pipes..... did I catch that right. I'm in the process of tearing my down right now. Just had to take from from the "Oh ****" feeling I was having after getting the car up on jack stands and pulling the covers.

Thanks,
Z

It is possible to get the mounts out through the front, but you'd better get creative. I had to attach a strap to the sway bar and stand on it(280 pounds) to move the sway bar enough to sneak the mounts through. If you can get the exhaust off then definitely do that, it'll save you a lot of trouble.

By the way, I just replaced my tranny mount for the second time. I had about 40k on the last one and it vibrated so bad I thought a couple of wheel weights had fallen off. The engine now feels like butter, especially in the 1,600-2,000 rpm range where it used to vibrate like it was coming apart. It literally feels like a new car. The old mount was still intact, but there were cracks all over it and it was allowing the tranny to sag a bit.

I also have had a cold rattle undeneath the car since I got it two and a half years ago. I could never find it, and it only happened when the car was cold and and at low RPM with the converter locked, like when you go around a corner at 20 mph in third gear and then accelerate easy. It sounded like a cat had come apart inside. While I was under there I noticed that the two heat shields aft of the secondary cats were tight, but still had a bit of a rattle when I hit them with my hand. I removed both of them and threw them in the garbage can, and the rattle is gone! I've tried finding that noise about 3 different times and finally succeeded!

Bringing this back from the dead. It looks like it's time to replace the left engine mount(or both) again. Heard a clunking sound when I let off the throttle under boost. Popped the hood and gassed it in reverse and drive.......looks like the left side of the engine is trying to come out of the car.

Question is, has anyone had success replacing the mounts without removing the exhaust? I know that I;ll snap off all 4 studs if I try to take it off. I had a lift last time I did them(and got very creative by basically hanging off the sway bar to gain clearance), but this time it's going to be in my driveway and I can't do it the same way. Anything I can unbolt to slip them in and out? If not I'm just going to pay somebody to do it, so if you've got any indy shop recommendations in the Bolingbrook area I'd appreciate it.

Just replaced mine about 15k miles ago and looks like I have to replace another one again too. I did a search to see if this is a common occurrence and sure enough you had to do the same thing. WTF are they selling faulty replacement oem mounts??

Damn. I would change em for you for three hundred bucks labor. It took me an hour to do both. Mounts are 100 bucks a piece for OEM Mercedes engine mounts. Tranny mount takes three minutes to change and costs 30 bucks. I spent more time jacking my car up then doing the tranny mount install.

i did my motor mounts without removing the exhaust. my motormounts were entirely collapsed when i first bought my car, so the engine was sitting really low. It was still a ***** but I did it..took forever.

easy way to check engine mounts.

1. open the hood
2. put the car in drive, press the brake and give it come throttle
3. if you see then engine move clockwise upwards more than an inch you need new mounts.

if you see it move like the video then for sure you need new ones
