How exactly did you remove the old wing? Were there screws? It looks like it broke easily.

No screws, just lots of epoxy. You see all that black crud on my trunk? Thats the old epoxy and that stuff is there for good. If you're getting a new spoiler then its fine but if you just want to remove your old one be prepared to shell out $$$ to strip down and re-paint the entire trunk.

Take a screwdriver and start working from either the left or right side of the spoiler. Look for a slot where you can wedge the screwdriver in and just start there. If you're gonna replace it with a new spoiler the grooves you'll make with the screwdriver wont matter because they'll be covered anyway. The spoiler will break apart in pieces, dont bother promising it to your buddies! :y

why would you just have not used double sided tape on the spoiler like the factory does?

So it looks like the OEM wing was literally ripped apart to do this mod. Is that the only way to do it? I am a bit O.C.D. and would like to keep the OEM piece in case I want to go back to it later, and cannot bear the thought of breaking it into a million pieces.

Yes. I tried to salvage it for the same reason but it is impossible.

You will like the carbon, and if you dont, you can always score a really good looking silver wing on the bay for very little $...

Guys, the trick to removing the OEM spoiler is to use a heavy guage nylon fishing wire. Leave the car out in the sun or heat with a heat gun for a bit, then slip the wire under an edge of the spoiler. Work the wire back and forth in a sawing motion and work down the line of the spoiler. Take your time and it will be a pain free experience. Once it's off, put some Goo-Gone on it and let it sit for a while. Take a plastic spatula and scrape of the residue. It'll be like it was never even there!

PS-I have 2 Chihauhuas too!

Pete

Thank you for the tip! I just cannot stomach the idea of destroying my original spoiler.

Thanks! Hopefully I will hear from him soon! I'm eager to get this on my E55 when it arrives next week!

Hi,

Looking for some recommendations for a spoiler. I want to mount a quality authentic looking spoiler on my 2007 E-350. I scratched the #$%# out of the trunk and my body shop suggested getting a spoiler instead of refinishing the trunk lid. The scratches will be hidden by the spoiler.

Is there a version that is mounted with screws?
Where can I find the best unpainted version so that it can be matched to my car?

The CF version is cool but I want to stick with white. Thanks.

TheVazha 11-28-2010 05:26 PM

Stay away from screws. Why drill unnecessary holes, you can encounter water intrusion, rust, etc..

Got to Ebay, they have unpainted ones for ~$60...

Enjoy the pics. The black carbon wing ON MY car just ties everything together. A good friend of mine installed it on his black 55 and it looks very euro, I think we scored. Enjoy the pics!
