Free Ram Air Intake Mod

Last night I was removing my oem python tubes getting them ready for exhaust wrap this weekend, and low and behold I stumbled across an interesting find.

This has been performed for years on mustang stock air boxes with good results, which is to remove the rubber snorkel going into the fender well and exposing the air filter.

My similar find is that I was looking at where the air comes into the stock python tubes right next to the radiator in the upper right and left corner of the front grill. You will notice there is a small folded piece of plastic that has a clip on the bottom and looks like it can be opened and closed up you unclip the little latch. This piece of plastic pretty much cuts off 90% of air that could be forced into the python tubes through the front grill, causing a ram air effect. I took a blade and cut the plastic piece in the fold and just unclipped the latch at the bottom.

The whole ram air box is now exposed and looks like it could be worth something. When I get home late tonight I will take a pic for you guys. Some of you may have already done this but I just wanted to post my findings.

Well be careful of large puddles. I heard these cars hydro lock really easy. With that open area water might get sucked in really easy.

Karlson 10-01-2010 09:52 AM

Lol about mode. It gives you 5whp too

shardul 10-01-2010 09:59 AM

that was the first mod i did on my car. cut the flaps off! :)

My flaps have been in the folded back position from day one, and I've driven through heavy rain and standing water without any problems. Our intake tracts are pretty convoluted, so the risk of hydro lock is quite small.

Jeremy cut mine out when he tuned it... he shook his head and glared at me the whole time. Fact is, I was pee-ing in the trash can at the time, however I suspect his disgust was with my inattention to the flaps.

My 55 is a power mod VIRGIN, so that coupled with wrapping the intake tubes, and adding a brand new set of K&N's will kick it off for me.

Oh BOY, here we go:)

Next mod will be to remove resonator, add 3" straight pipes, remove AMG mufflers, add 3" straight pipes:)

Same here, I janked those flap out the day I brought the car home. Bruce @ TTM have some nice ram-air flap that he sell. Those should help alot more at speed.

similar to RPI scoops that the M5/M6's run? They look badass through the grill.

chiromikey 10-01-2010 11:57 AM

to further the "free" ram air mod, if you look at your grill, it also has the slits blocked right in front of the intakes. i used a dremel and cut out the blocked portion so that the intakes have even more access to ram air. then the next step was to fabricate my own intake scoops that attatched to the the plastic ducts.

...and yes, it is worth some power. ;)

Here are the TTM intake scoops! They come with the SS hardware and the required spacers also SS.

Funniest thing I've read all week.

skratch77 10-01-2010 01:07 PM

I cut those off the first week I had the car too!!!

cahiil55k 10-01-2010 01:24 PM

A month into ownership, I bent the flaps back and they've stayed that way since. I didn't remove them completely because my car is under warranty so should any foreign objects or water destroy my engine, I didn't want the inspector to notice the missing flaps.

Roverron 10-01-2010 01:34 PM

Can anyone see the picture of TTM's scoops?

I did the same thing but i also went a little further, i took off the bracket holding the horn and flipped it upside down and bent it so its basically hiding behind the bumper away from the radiator and the passenger side intake.:zoom:

i got a nice pic on my droid but i dont know how to get it on here it looks way cleaner.
