Car running rough.. Burning oil...
So I picked up this car with 41k. Previous owner said mb had just done the 40k service. I drove the car home and after about 600 miles on my trip back the dashboard told me to fill the engine oil with 1qt at the next refuel. Which I did. I called the previous owner and he said he never had seen that. Yesterday, I started the car up cold and it was running rough (car was shaking at idle) and the check engine light came on. After it warmed up, the car seemed to run fine but the oil warning came on again. (this is about 2000 miles later). This morning the check engine light disappeared but the oil warning kept coming up. I figured I'd add another quart when I could get to a gas station. This evening, the LCD on the cluster turned red and said bring to workshop engine oil level. The car sat for a few hours after this and when I turned it on the car was running rough and CEL came back on. This time, when I drove it, I had about 20% power.... Giving gas and pushing the throttle harder made no difference in the slow acceleration. I went to a gas station, put in another quart and the issue continued. I'm going to bring it to my mechanic tomorrow to read the codes and probably change the oil.
Do these cars tend to burn oil fast? Keep in mind it's a kleemann stage 4. Do u think clearing the codes might reset the engine to run back at full power? Is it in limp mode now?
Thanks in advance.

is the car actually losing/burning oil or are you just getting the dash indicator? i've had 2 oil level sensors go bad already so i'm not a fan of that system and would quit adding oil until you have things checked out. these cars don't tend to burn oil. i've been over stage 4 for over 100k miles and still don't burn any oil.
what does the computer show when you check the oil level with the instrument panel?

Interesting regarding the oil sensors... For some reason I can't read the oil level in the car. I turn on the ignition, go to the oil level screen. It says waiting to check oil make sure you are level. Then it says reading oil levels please wait. Then it goes bak to the default outside temperature screen... Weird...
Even if the oil sensors are bust wh would the car run rough? Hmmm... Hope this isn't a major issue. I'm about to buy a warranty..

These cars dont like too much oil ... so stop adding... unless you see evidence in smoke that u are burning or leaking oil dont add any more.
Get it towed to dealer... or dont drive it hard, check underside panels for leaks.
You can do damage by running the car with too much oil...
I dont think I have ever added oil to my car.

Do not rev it past 3000 you def have to much oil in there now.I need to add a quart if I track my car hard I get the same message on the dash.
Usually after 3 track nights ill get it.
To measure oil the car has to sit flat for 15-20 with engine off and that reading you did will probably tell you to reduce oil.
Your rough idle was probable a miss fire and had nothing to do with your oil.
Get the codes read and drain that car asap and put 9.5 quarts of 0-40 mobile one
If you make it to the track tonight I can scan your codes bro.I just hope its nothing serious
There is 2 drain plugs also so make sure you drain both.

I'd start out with 8.5 qts. Check level. Add more if necessary.

what do you guys use to read codes for the E55?
kleeman55rob, I would not worry about it for now but proceed with what the guys mentioned above. Running such a high HP car does not more attention, and since you just got it, you are still learning her quirks per say.

The non dyno mode oil checker blows. If you can get the car into dyno mode, there is an exact reading of the oil in the engine when idling.
You don't have to get into full dyno mode, just to the screens and then you can check it.
Here is a vid. Watch for a screen to pop up that looks like this below. It blurry but it's at the bottom of the list in qts.
When you start the car on this screen, she will show up on the bottom.
By all means though, get that oil level sensor changed. Piece of cake for a shop to change it out or a DIY guy.

I burn about a quart every 2500 miles roughly. I drive around 75% on city streets and the car has over 65K miles. Dealer said this is no cause for alarm. Your situation sounds more extreme.

So u guys think the oil levels plus the misfiring are unrelated? I forgot to add last night the car did emit a faint burning smell. I will try the dyno mode oil checker today. Also, skratch

After reading this, I honestly think that you have way too much oil in your car. And that oil is causing your problem, how much oil can hurt your car forcing it out the exhaust and burning out your cats. Definitely take it in, I bet they remove some oil. Or they might just drain all of it, then refill.

Interesting... So the consesus is that my car has too much oil, and my oil sensors need to be replaced. Anyone have those part numbers? I'm gonna pull the codes, and flush all of the oil and refill it today.

You def have about 2 extra quarts in there now.
drain both pans and refill with about 9-9.5 quarts and read your codes to see what came up.
your car might be in limp mode because it knows you added to much oil or its in limp because its miss firing and shut down a cylinder.
what ever you do dont drive it hard
whats crazzy is I just had to change my oil level sensor last month,I was getting oil sensor malfunction on the dash every 5 min

I'm confused, if my sensors were fine then why would it tell me to add a quart of oil twice. If I actually needed the oil I would think my oil would be in the correct range..

thats why you should drain and refill and go from there,it told you to add a quart right after adding the oil?
It needs 15-20 rest with engine off for it to see how much oil is in the car,it cant read it right while your driving.
park car 20 min on flat level
turn key to on position and DONT start the car
read oil level threw the display and tell us what it says

No it told me add a quart about 500 miles after I got the car. Which I did. Then 2000 miles later (two days ago) it told me to do it again. I didnt do it until my dash turned all red and said "visit workshop engine oil level"

Only true way to tell is drain the oil and refill. That way you take the sensor variable out. FWIW when I changed my oil I put 9 quarts in and a few miles later I got a "lower engine oil" message. Refilled it with 8.5 quarts and never seen the message again.

When was the last time your spark plugs were changed out?
They are a 50k or 5 year service item. That could be a culprit to your rough idle

So I just went to the dyno mode menu and there was no reading on the amount of oil in the car. It said engine oil level: -.- also, just went to the standard oil level checker and it said fill 2 qts
