15w-50 Mobil 1 ???
I picked some up at Walmart- about $25 for the 5 quart jug. they didnt have any 0w-40 in stock.
I am not sure what these numbers mean but this is what i am thinking...
15w is for cold protection... 0w is better cold protection So, I need to wait for the car to warm up before i drive like crazy --- I think the old M series didnt let you rev too high until the engine was warm enough --- So, I basically need to monitor myself....
-50 is the extent the oil protects under heat. -40 is less protection. So, my oil will not break down and burn as fast --- So, 50 is more protection for our super hot engines...
Since the oil is thicker it will not be the best mpg or hp oil for the car but with this much HP its a non issue.
So, Are my thoughts correct? or should I just return the oil and wait for walmart to restock the 0w-40? With a full synthetic with a high heat rating I think it is really no big deal.

yeah - i will wait and see what some of these other guys say --
I did notice they had some diesel oil there it was 5w-40 and specifically for diesel ... meaning it has more cleaning agents.
This 15w-50 Mobil 1 states it is more for racing --- and the 0w-40 states its the Euro blend.

there was a thread about the same subject last year.
search to read all the pther guys opinions.

Higher viscosity = more drag = more heat = less viscosity . . . so, use the lower viscosity oil to start with. Lower heat, better heat transfer and the same protection. Before Mobil one Racing Oil we used a specially blended 10W synthetic in my (road) race cars which ran at 13,500 RPM all day and never had a failure due to oil. Today's F1 engines are capable of 22,000 RPM (but limited to 18K by the rules) and they all run low viscosity oils. As the lateral G loads increased, for years, Mobil 1 synthetic grease was used on CV joints by everyone and I mean everyone for any sort of long distance race as other greases would literally slide off the surfaces and you risked CV failure.

Multigrade oils have two viscosity characteristics. The first number indicates winter temperatures (the "w")
The oil needs to be viscous enough at start up (where motors get the most 'abuse') and 15w-50 is capable of flowing well enough at 15 degrees C. The second number indicates the viscosity protection of the oil at higher temperatures.
AMG recommends a specific oil (0w) based primarily on start up considerations. If the oil is not viscous enough to flow well enough then you can cause damage with some dry running since the oil can't reach moving parts quickly enough. Less dry running obviously means less engine wear. And that's what AMG is concerned about. The only time that 0w is "too thin" is at start up and that's when you want thin oil. Notice how the ticking and noises go away once the oil warms and flows a bit? Using 15W is making it a bit harder on your motor.
Once the motor reaches operating temp the higher number comes into play maintaining proper viscosity even at high heat. AMG has decided that 40 has the best viscosity characteristic (of the Mobil 1 formulas) for higher temps.
But another issue is that the formulas are different with the different multigrade oils. 15w-50 does not have the same additives or formula as 0w-40. Phosphorus is an issue; it both protects against wear but also can destroy the cats. AMG has determined that the formula in the oil they recommend will give proper protection and yet not destroy emission components.
So, like most folks we just do what AMG says

0w40 mobil 1 syn is on sale($4.99) at shucks ohriely kraggen until the 25th.
It is mb spec, the oil you picked up is not 229.5 mb spec
That's the explanation
do your engine a favor return it to wally.

10w60 wt ????????????
You should heed your own advice and Search and read what others say
Don't use diesel oil spec 5w40 either
And never use a 30wt oil ever in an AMG engine.
