Upshift?

Hey guys- quick observation -

When I just floor my E55 in "S" sport mode and then let off it stays in the lower gears a long time, despite being in "D" - meaning I never manually downshifted. The lower gear on accel is awesome, but when I lift it should upshift, I think. This makes the on-ramp blast a lot of fun but the transition to freeway driving a little unusual.

Is this by design?

Completely normal, just drive in M:p::y

HeissRod 05-08-2011 08:12 AM

It's completely normal. The car is waiting to see if you are going to get back into it immediately. I don't know if you have found this out, but just click upshift on the back of the steering wheel or the shifter a couple of times to tell the car not to hold the gear after you've let off.

yup normal...freaked me out first time it happened to me.

You will notice with some time that the tranny does some cool stuff, If you drive if hard and slow suddenly it will make an aggrisive down shift.

This is one of my favorite things about the tranny (7spd at least, Im assuming same type programming on the 5spd)! I do this often so I can hear the gurgle when I let off! Puts a smile on my face everytime.

Thanks, I will try the " + " button on the wheel next time...I thought since it said "D" that clicking up a gear wouldn't yield a result as the user interface is already saying its set to top gear...

Still learning, still love this car!

I'm thinking about upgrades like a pulley, but what's the point if I'm losing traction @ 40 with the power I already have? :zoom:

Not a bad problem, I'm not complaining!

HeissRod 05-10-2011 09:35 AM

Even though it's in D, you can still change gears. It's not 100% control, but you still have the ability.

By aggressive, do you mean that it feels like God himself just kicked the rear end of the car forward?

Mine does that as well. I have only had it for a week but it appears to be normal.

+1 on the button upshift.

To make matters more fun you should swap them out for E63 paddles to replace the buttons. :y

Just your tranny in race mode. I love when mine does that.

To get mine out of that race mode, I just bump the stick once to the right (or is it left, I forget now) . It seems to shut it off. My kids always laugh when I do that...."Why did you do that dad?" "Ahhhh, I am just telling her to relax and calm down"

They love 0-60 stuff. Won't go faster than that with them and I always get booed.

Always fun on the hwy onramp..nail it, merge, get back into it expecting part throttle in a higher gear watch the traction light go nuts instead...good times.

That happened to me once. I got into it for a split second and let off right before the 1-2 shift. The tranny went ahead and shifted as firm as it was preparing to and it felt like someone just rearended me, although no one was behind me. :rolf:

I get that sometimes too, especially in 1rst to second in sport after doing the 'sneaky ecu reset'. but pressing the (+) button on the wheel in S does nothing, not even the (-) button, always have to do the ole righty bump on the gear lever.
