Just an update. Ryder recalled all deliveries of this product as it is NOT the correct fluid inside. My trans is going in tomorrow, and I ordered this a ways back, even gave some away to someone else, and then I find out on my own that my UPS shipment was intercepted and delivered back to the warehouse. Of course I received the , "oh, someone SHOULD have called you" response.

So FYI. Going to order Royal Purple, Amazon will overnight it for $3.99.

Know you’re at ease with the 722.6’s innards, though the Royal Purple link you’ve provided specifically states:
“[our] Max ATF is not recommended…for Mercedes Benz 236.12 & 236.14” applications.

Having successfully utilized Fuchs 4134 in several of these gearboxes makes it worthy of personal recommendation. YMMV :)

True, this has been discussed already, here or on the other forum. Has more to do with Mercedes approval from what I understand, not anything to do with the fluid itself. In fact in the specs itself it is listed as compatible ,just not Mercedes approved for warranty purposes, not that Mercedes would have a way to know. Notice it is also listed for Chrysler ATF+4, same as SRT8 boys use in their 722.6 trans along with RP and RL.

The Fuchs is just MB fluid, same stuff from what I have read. Since you brought it up, can you offer to everyone a recommended place to purchase?

Max ATF is recommended in vehicles requiring any of these automatic transmission fluids:
  • Allison: C-4, TES-295, TES-389
  • Audi G-052-025-A2
  • BMW: LA2634, LT71141
  • Chrysler: ATF+, ATF+2, ATF+3, ATF+4

^ The aforementioned Max ATF “236.x approval" ≠ 236.14

Fuchs 4134 is ~$11 a liter from RM European. No sales tax and free FedEx (overnight to Hermosa Beach) shipping.
It’s about half that from my friendly jobber.

Good luck with your build. :y

Thanks for the link, always good to have additional sources, I'm going to give RP a call tomorrow to discuss further. Amazon price shot up on this stuff by $30 bucks.

I normally use Fuchs or MB from autohausaz.com or parts.com. I check both to see which is cheaper with shipping.

Although some Chrysler cars may have the same transmission, I believe the torque converter is different. Therefore, just because Chrysler recommends a fluid for the 722 doesn't mean it is MB compatible.

The Shell says "It is a premium semi-synthetic ATF designed for use in Mercedes Benz 7 speed transmissions." The word "semi" in that sentence bothers me.

After reading more, it looks like the Shell 134 actually is ok in Mercedes, not just Chrysler. At that price, I would probably use that over Fuchs or MB.

In fact, just ordered 12 bottles for under $30 delivered. Assuming it gets here and is correct, I won't be buying ATF for a long time.

I received my ATF the next day after order. Was Spirax ATF not the Shell. I was po'd to not get what i ordered. Ryder got UPS to pick it up the next day. Vendor sent the wrong batch of ATF to Ryder. Said to look again 2-3wks to see if they have any more.

Torque converters in both use the same clutch packs, just a different stall which has nothing to do with fluid type. If you look at my transmission build thread you will see where it is stated that even SRT8 boys upgrade to Mercedes clutches in their transmission, otherwise they are identical except for the output flange and bellhousing, and internal clutch quality on each pack in the trans itself. And we're talking about 600-700hp 5000lb AWD Jeeps here, not just sedans. I just picked up my rebuilt torque converter yesterday and had a long discussion with the rebuilder about the trans ,etc. Also, on the Shell question, found this elsewhere a while back.

The Shell ATF 134 is a synthetic oil made from group III (High Viscosity Index) HVI base stocks. For all practical purposes group III, IV and V base stocks are full synthetic. If you are really up for a education Google group III Synthetic and start reading. The important thing is the ATF 134 has met MB specifications for use in the 722.9 and 722.6 transmissions and is considered a lifetime fill fluid for the 722.9 after the 39K flush. Now that I have found a source of supply for under $5 a quart mine with get filter and fluid changes every 30K. Following is a short read on synthetic base stocks.

Synthetic Base Stocks

Synthetic motor oils are man made oils from the following classes of lubricants:

Polyalphaolefin (PAO) = American Petroleum Institute (API) Group IV base oil

Synthetic esters, etc = API Group V base oils (non-PAO synthetics, including diesters, polyolesters, alklylated napthlenes, alkyklated benzenes, etc.)

Hydrocracked/Hydroisomerized = API Group III base oils. Chevron, Shell, and other petrochemical companies developed processes involving catalytic conversion of feed stocks under pressure in the presence of hydrogen into high-quality mineral lubricating oil. In 2005, production of GTL (gas-to-liquid) Group III base stocks began, the best of which perform much like polyalphaolefin. Group III-base stocks are considered synthetic motor oil only in the United States;[13] elsewhere they are not allowed to be marketed as "synthetic".
Valvoline MaxLife seems to be compatible as well and available locally for those in a pinch.

FYI, I received a call from the general manager at Ryder, Scott. Great guy, apologized, and explained that they still do not have the correct fluid otherwise they would get some to me asap as he knows this put me in a pinch. However, he 'took' care of me beyond what I was expecting.

I will make it a point to purchase from them again in the future. EDIT., just went ahead and placed a backorder with them. Good people.

Been on the phone 2x w/Ryder this AM. They credited me the original order and said to reorder since they have some in stock. Got VM from Joseph about having some in their PA warehouse. Placed the order.

Ryder called after placing an order. They have some in stock. However, there were 10orders ahead of mine and only have 12qts left to send out to me. They will backorder the other 12qts when more come in. Will wait next day or so for them to arrive.

OK, well, some updates.

I spoke in depth with Chris from Royal Purple.

First off, Royal Purple is aware of the confusion on their site/bottles and they have already changed the bottle labeling. All new bottles now going out the door state 722.6 236.12 (NAG1) and prior compatible. Notice not 236.14.

As stated here and elsewhere, those that have used the NEW MB OEM fluid have noticed shifting issues/soft shift ,etc when doing a complete flush in their 722.6 236.12 and prior transmissions. There is a reason for this.

The new MB OEM fluid is a lower viscosity fluid for fuel consumption purposes. MB states it is backwards compatible with the older transmissions such as the 5sp units, with the added issue of softer shifts,etc......

The Royal Purple viscosity is comparable to the older 5sp MB fluid which many seem to favor over the new MB fluid in the 5sp trans.

So if I were to throw something out there, the Royal Purple is a better fluid for the older 5sp transmissions vs. the new MB fluid. Makes sense?

Not enough field testing exist yet on the older viscosity fluid in the newer 722.9 transmission to allow them to place a stamp of approval on the product.

Yep ordered my 2 cases yesterday showed up today. Good disposable oil in my 'new' transmission to flush through in a few thousands miles.

Same, I had a full case of Shell waiting at the door yesterday. Won't be buying fluid for years and saved well over a hundred bucks (not that much, but it hurts on a moral level spending $12 a liter for oil). This is a great deal to jump on.

Autozone carries Valvoline Import Multi-vehicle Full Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid for $7/quart. It is recommended for lots of import cars & list Mercedes Benz - NAG-1, 236.10 and older.
I bought transmission fluid dipstick from Amazon. It has min & max level marks at (2) temperatures, 80°C (180°F) and 25°C (77°F) respectively. With the engine warm my temperature gauge reads about 80°C.

If you are near a shell distributor, you can get Shell ATF 134 for a little over $60 for a case of 12 quarts which works out to a little over $5 a quart. You have to go to shell's website to find a local distributor.

Geez, doubled in price in a couple of years!

I picked up the Valvoline Max at my local O'Reilly's for $7.49 a qt. A few other threads I read recommended this for easily sourcing locally.

236.10 transmission oil

I was unable to find the Shell 3403-3-115 oil for the 722.6 trans but did find a wholesaler in Ohio that sells the shell 3403-m-115 equivalent. The company is called COOLANTS PLUS in Hamilton OH 513-892-4000
They sell the 3403-m-115 equivalent oil for 4.18 per quart or 50.23 case
You can also order the newer Shell ATF 134, which is the 236.12 and 236.314 oil for 5.51 per quart.

alternatively, you can order the more expensive Fuchs Titan 3353 which is the same oil as the shell 134
