Bad oil filters, for the DIY'ers

1 Attachment(s)
This goes in hand with the thread recently regarding oil changes. Use a genuwine mercedes benz oil filter.
This was the first time I used an after market filter in the car and it will be the last! The shop had an option of two filters and I took the more exspensive one because they said it was better quality, I think it was Bosch.............................. I never had this problem in my other mercs.

WTF after 6 months (3000miles) it looks like this. Falling apart and collapsing......

It wasnt scheduled for an oil change but I needed to drain the oil to work on the car for another task.

Wow....crazy. That looks like an OEM filter though...at least I haven't seen a non oem filter with that spiral around it ( I haven't seen a bosch one though so I could be wrong ).

I just chaged the OEM filter with K&N and 500 km so far and no issue at all.

Anyone used K&N?

justinwrock Oct 13, 2011 07:17 PM

Did they give you the option of a fleece filter?

AMG_RL Oct 13, 2011 07:43 PM

I use Mann oil filters on my car, never had an issue. Supposedly they make the oem filters as well but don't quote me on that.

Yu...my oem says mann on it.

It almost looks like the filter was crushed from being too long for the filter housing?

Or from not being inserted all the way in, which can be really hard on non oem filters. I used to run non oem filters until my car had lifter noises that went away with the oem filter....crazy stuff I tell ya.

used K&N twice and no problems at all -- When replacing the filter is still rigid and looks good

madmla21 Oct 13, 2011 10:49 PM

Mann makes the K&N filter. I have always purchased the K&N as they tend to be cheaper.

Either the filter was incorrect (too long) or it wasn't put far enough under the cap... And yes, Mann is an OEM supplier.

I agree the first horizontal line scribed on the filter has to be oriented just under the skirt of the housing which means you have to twist the filter and use a little effort as you push it in, otherwise a crushed filter will result.

novae500 Oct 14, 2011 08:06 AM

dont think the filter was turned all the way to cover the white line, and when the housing was tightened down, it crushed the filter???

Puralator are also rebranded Mann Filters.

Ok guys I have to admit that I was blaming the oil filter at first and I can do the oil filter change with my eyes closed and one hand .......

I am sure I checked the fitment when I did it and swear I pushed and twisted it on like I always do.........Hey a mechanic always blames his tools and never himself.

Yes to confirm 100% DO NOT USE PAPER FILTERS, I use only the fleece filters.........

Thanks for the usefull info regarding O.E. being made by MANN, Mercedes charge £15+ for their filter...
I have not seen a K&N oil filter, but would consider using since you guys sound positive about them....

I typically use either Mann, or the OEM with AMG embossed on it. This picture is reallly weird, looks like the filter was collapsing on itself.

thats what I thought and also the string holding it together is falling apart:crazy: hopefully nothing is left in the engine.

Yuille36 Oct 14, 2011 11:33 AM

That would be really bad if a piece of string got caught in a oil passage. :(

Was the picture you posted in your OP showing the broken down black falling apart filter a picture of a "paper filter"?

You said the filter was put on at the dealer and might have been a Bosch, just curious if you remember whether it was paper or fleece material?

Also found a useful post about the Purolator L25277 (fleece filter) available at local auto parts retail stores being made by Mann for repackaging by Purolator.

Does anyone or has anyone used or would recommend the Purolator L25277?
