DIY: ROW Air Box mod

I read a lot about the ROW Air Box Mod, but I couldn't find a good DIY, just a couple of pictures here and there. Based on that I took the jump and modded my stock air boxes and documented the process.
Keep in mind this can through a CEL if you are not tunned.

You will need:
- A Dremel with a cutting wheel
- Exacto knife
- Long neck pliers
- Sand Paper 150-200

Optional:
- MAF cleaner
- Compressed air

You start with your stock air box top:
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...f5285b8c1c.jpg

Make sure you remove the MAF sensor:
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...6d2f5bac0d.jpg

I just rip off the thin plastic lattice by hand:
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...6ccba9aa09.jpg

With a Dremel I cut a superficial groove in the black plastic:
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...2897c98db1.jpg

Close up of the groove:
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...b97302a0b9.jpg

You now can easily separate and remove the plastic pieces:
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...23866ebbfd.jpg

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...6f57885aee.jpg
Note: It may be possible to use a heat gun to melt the glue a remove the black plastic without breaking it, but I didn't try.

With the Dremel cut the "trumpet":
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...18191c60a2.jpg

Be careful to cut the trumpet but not dig in the metal parts around the MAF:
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...17211c99c6.jpg

After cutting, quite rough:
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...bd6da6c99a.jpg

Trim hard to reach sections with long neck pliers:
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...7700dd732b.jpg

Trim the glue with an Exacto knife:
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...142f432167.jpg

Sand the edges to remove the remaining glue and to smooth the rough cutting around the trumpet:
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...ca1542b9a4.jpg

Clean the air Box with compressed air, then water then compressed air again, make sure there is absolutely no trace of dust or water, then reassemble the MAF sensor. While you are at it you can use some MAF cleaner to make sure the MAF is grease free.

Hope this helps!

Nice write-up. Notice any difference?

Umm...you just destroyed a perfectly good velocity stack. :(

Not with that flat spot

The flat spot may not be optimal, but it still works better than not having a it at all. The maf especially takes advatange of this because it helps straighten the airflow.

Interesting...

The issue is that the plate is highly restricive: (US vs ROW air box)

Also because there is a gap in the back I highly doubt that there are any velocity stack effect:

Sure real ROW air boxes will be better, but for the price, can't beat it.

I have known about this mod, and the velocity stack issue held me back.

To the OP. Most excellent write up. Kudos.

Keep us posted on how she feels. I try not to second guess engineers though, at least often.

What is the price/part number for the ROW boxes?

+1

lfe136 05-29-2012 03:25 PM

has anyone found the ROW part number or cost? Also, does anyone know if this mod really makes any difference?

y'all do know that you can send your factory boxes to bruce and send him some cash and he will send you back some air boxes done like this?

gotta remember those engineers design for performance, AND safety, AND longevity, AND NVH, AND noise, AND emissions, AND AFR, AND...

(of course all within a certain budget - otherwise we'd all be driving cars with gold plated engine parts)

When you guys are saying ROW what do u mean ?

ROW - Rest of the World (as in non-US cars)

Interesting mod and ballsy move by OP to perform surgery on the air boxes..it would be interesting to determine the gains.

If your modded you have already second guessed engineering lol. :y

BLACKONBLACKC63 10-23-2012 09:57 PM

Do you need to disconnecting the battery before remove/disconnect the MAF sensor?

WHTEVO 10-23-2012 10:16 PM

/\ No

For some reasons the pics from the OP are gone, so here I repost with the pics.

Hmm.... That sure looks like it would allow more airflow. Real way to tell if you are getting more air would be to log MAP before and after.

How does it drive ? Any difference ? Still smooth ?

I did this to my E63. Reset adaptations. No go. Lean faults at idle.
