What's your commuter?

I have racked up 37,000 miles on my '06 E55, thanks to the fact that I'm in the city and never need to drive. However, the little lady and I we're looking to buy a home in the burbs and am thinking that I need the finest cheapest car I could find with decent mpg.

Just curious, do any of you have beater-commuters? I was thinking some cheapo old car, maybe a 90's accord or something.

theunderlord Feb 23, 2012 05:57 PM

Not really a beater, but

TDI 40+ MPG.... 6 Speed, pretty basic, but it's actually pretty fun to drive.

BlkE55K Feb 23, 2012 06:03 PM

My beater is actually the newest vehicle we have in our garage, which is a 2011 ML350. It's a lease so we don't care for it as much as the E55 or the E350. I also work from home too so don't have much of a commute. :naughty:

_AMG_ Feb 23, 2012 06:03 PM

I use my C63 for daily commute.
My work is 6 miles away from my house. So I average around 10-15 miles per day.
I do however have a Toyota Tacoma truck that I drive occasionally, but that's mostly for work.

If your work is 6 miles from home, shouldn't you be at least 12 miles per day? :nix:

Prolly not what you want to hear - but I commute in my E55.

My commute is ~20 miles round trip.

.trunzx Feb 23, 2012 06:14 PM

50-60 miles daily in my e55. Coming up on 115k miles

CharlyE500 Feb 23, 2012 06:16 PM

I used to drive round trip 80 miles per day with my 745Li that I had. Too much trouble with that car, sold it and got W210 E55. And now I only drive 2 miles a day since office moved to 1 mile from my house. You know, W210 E55 is actually very fun to drive, enough torque and weight less than W211. Very reliable and good MPG. Freeway 25-26MPG, city depend how i drive........ Other E55 for commute is not bad idea at all !

izzyz28 Feb 23, 2012 06:23 PM

I've racked up 60K on my E55 daily driving it for the last three years, just crossed 120K. My commute is now 10 miles each way plus the driving I have to do for work and leisure. I too thought about getting a cheaper, more fuel-efficient car, but what's the point? Unless it's a total hunk of crap, which I wouldn't want to drive, it'll cost me more to own two cars than just rack up miles on the E. I'll take the comfort on a 300 mile road trip and gladly pay the additional $20-$30 in gas to enjoy it.

purplehayes65 Feb 23, 2012 06:24 PM

05 Triumph Bonneville when I can. Otherwise its my beater Pathfinder

BBBSS Feb 23, 2012 06:30 PM

Out of all the cars I own, this is what gets the best fuel mileage. lol Around 22 on the highway when cruising around the speed limit. Around 30-35 miles a day round trip to work for me.

black06c230 Feb 23, 2012 07:03 PM

2006 C230 is my daily....2500 miles per month on avg.

so yeah the E55 sits except on weekends usually.

motorkas Feb 23, 2012 07:14 PM

suburu legacy for the daily. . .put 46,000 miles on the 55 in 2.5 years as my toy (can't stop driving it:)

RaceHorse Feb 23, 2012 07:21 PM

To me its obvious you are leaning towards something other than commuting in your E55. However, if I were you I wouldn't go too cheap. I travel about 120 miles roundtrip. If you go too cheap and you spend a decent amount of time in a real POS you will be miserable. Also consider missing work or your time if you have troubles with the car, to me its not worth it. Keep in mind the type of drive you have, I like having a little power for hills and merging into traffic. I have a 2004 Acura TL with 156xxx on the clock, 26 mpg isn't the greatest, but its not like vibrating away in a tiny car and getting out with a stiff back. I've had 2 Accords 232K on an 02 and 264k on the wife's old 94. Hondas have treated me well. Good luck!!!

Ha! I'm looking at some Sportwagon TDIs right now. Have you tuned yours yet? I hear it helps a bunch and is pretty cheap.

sunil517 Feb 23, 2012 08:07 PM

90 300zxTT

With Atlanta interstates, you can guarantee rock chips on the glass at least twice a year if you are fortunate.
I have stuck with Honda accords, right now the V6 coupe. Very dependable and goes forever.
Great for getting to work and home and nice ride for the buck.

No tuning yet, just duals, springs, wheels and some cosmetic crap. It's awesome though, you won't be disappointed.

e55amgrocket Feb 23, 2012 10:52 PM

Dodge ram 2500 diesel. I get 20-26mpg on the highway, can tow just about anything, beat most things I come across and black the road out at will

JoelE55 Feb 24, 2012 12:24 AM

60-65 one way daily using my 93 rice bag (honda accord). Sometime take the beast out to work, can't afford drive her everyday since gas price is worst than gold..LOL!

GT-ER Feb 24, 2012 12:29 AM

I have the world's most unreliable Jeep Liberty. It's litterally the worst car I've ever had and it was free ( my mother in law gave it to me ). It runs pretty good, but EVERYTHING has been replaced on it ( engine, tranny, power windows, AC, waterpump, and many many more things at only 107,000 miles ). For free I can't complain I guess.

zoink Feb 24, 2012 12:34 AM

Same as underlord. Golf tdi here... 80-mile commute with 45mpg - aggressive driving still got me 43mpg; easy driving 48.7mpg record so far. Can't beat that. Resale value is also crazy good where in ca.
