No, the accident in Australia happend in May while the NHTSA meeting was in April. However, I hope whomever is in contact with NHTSA sends them a link to the story.

Because MBUSA pays these attorneys to do exactly just that.
Imagine how bad the press would be if say Autoblog or Left Lane News got a hold of this?
I would think the headlines would read somewhere along the lines of "Mercedes Benz automobiles defective gas tank woes release toxic gas fumes into car, you and your children could suffer possibly pass out, MBUSA trying it's best to deflect blame!"

This.

Yesterday Night I filled up not even to the click, because I heard the price was going up today (which It did, by $0.40), and then today when I came out at about noon, my garage smelt like a bomb waiting to blow, like instant headache from the fumes. I still have all the garage doors open, as well as all the cars doors, but I think permanent damage was done to the interior, I still smell it now and im 25-30 feet from the car.... I hope the NHTSA reads this. If my car smells like gas tomorrow, I will be interested in opening more lawsuits, because I cant even drive it without getting lightheaded or getting a pulsing pounding in my head. I literally cant take this anymore.

Welcome to my world. Oh and those metal access covers that Mercedes claims protect the interior cabin, not so much. My car was leaking gas through them and the foam insulation including my seat cushion absorbed gas as well. I have let the car air out for 2 weeks now and you can still smell it.

Yea, I am thinking I got the insulation wet with gas, I have torn apart the back seat and soaked everything with baking soda (heard this helps with the smell of gas) and I can actually notice a difference. Its still very visible, but I don't get a head ache from it. I am going to try to clean the carpet and the insulation with a carpet shampooer hand attachment and see where that gets me. I had this happen before and the smell cleared up after about a week, but was not as severe. Hopefully I wont have to smell gas for the rest of the 55's life.

Good idea, autoblog or jalopnik should pick the story up. As far as claims, it is hard to count because it is all across the board not just E55's as Mercedes claims.

You are currently driving your car with the leak? The smell got so bad that I got a headache immediately entering the car and didn't feel safe driving for extended periods having to smell gas the entire time, I would leave the windows down and sunroof open for it to air out. After taking everything apart, the plastic nozzle on the sending unit had a hairline crack that was causing a constant mist of gas spraying the entire time the car was running. Once those cavities fill up with gas there is nowhere for it go other than run out those metal access covers and into the car's interior. Extremely bad design.

File a claim with NHTSA immediately if you have not yet. Having a car currently experiencing trouble that they can look at could be a huge help. I'd make sure to clearly state that the car is currently leaking and they can inspect if they want to if possible.

The more examples they can see, and inspect, the better.

I have already filed. I will try and get a hold of them and show them how extremely bad it is just to fill to the click... If it was this bad without the click I could only imagine. Needless to say, garage furnace pilot is off, as well as all electronics unless im in my garage.

Funny thing is I sent this story to every local news station asking them to help and not one reply.

You would think this would make a great story for any reporter.

2005 E55 AMG; 2005 CLK 500 (sold)
a little bump here...

Got a call from NHTSA today. They asked me a few questions about the fuel leak and I answered them. He said to me that he has receive a ton of complaints for the W211, that they are currently working on this problem and trying to get Mercedes to "do the right thing" and actually fix the problem. Hopefully Mercedes steps up here and takes care of the W211s.

Good to see that they are getting tons of feedback from MB customers which will hopefully dispute MBUSA's claims that our issue is a small part of the overall manufacturing qty. and that dealer's original recall repair caused this big problem

Im almost certain i have this problem, as when ever i fill the car up it smells like gas in side. but i haven't taken it to the dealer to fix it, and id probably fix it my self. Do i need to document the problem in some way or can i still file?
