Yup, what actually happens is the gas leaks into the middle and soaks up there and inevitably it starts to smell

The dealer who did the work removed it, I have no idea how it was removed.

Remove a few screws, loosen a couple fittings, and pull off a couple hoses, it is that simple. Takes about 10 minutes to drop the tank.

so did you have pooling of gas around the driver side sending unit? Tell us you symtoms that lead to this.

That is nasty! I saw an e55 that was hit in the front end and gas was all over in the back seat. Scarry if you smoke as well.

Symptoms were gas smell and pooling at driver side sender upon filling up. Initially dealer resealed sender, then replaced sender then replaced gas tank which ultimately fixed the issue.

I has everything changed as well including gas tank and less than a year later, both senders went bust and had them changed again

Ok seriously old *** thread revival.
However I wonder....Hulk what gas do you use? Seems ridiculous that after such a change it goes bust in a year

Mostly chevron 93 and always did the chevron fuel system cleaner every 3k miles. It's just a bad design. I remember when the dealership was fixing it the first time and I left and literally 100 miles later fuel smell again and new sender was needed

Sold - 05' E55
With the fuel recall, does this have a different neck? Is it a metal tube verses plastic?

Soon to go in for the recall -

The plastic tanks have bumps at the top where the mounting threads are bonded into the tank. The tanks crack around these bumped areas. Mine started to crack there. The spot I'm talking about is higher than the sending units. So, when you fill all the way up the gas leaks and puddles around the sending unit. This is what happened to mine but the sending units can also fail and cause the same problem. That's why the extended warranty covers the tank as well as the components.
