Today is a great day! New motor under warranty!
I bought an 07 e63 with 35k miles back in December. The motor had some ticking so I took it by the dealer. He said that it was no big deal and heard much louder.
About 300 miles later the motor went. Maybe related to the ticking, maybe not. One of the valves broke of and impaled itself into the piston which then proceeded to smash against the spark plug.
After waiting for a couple weeks, I got word that MB is going to replace the motor. The car has a Mercedes Benz extended warranty.
Like I said...today is a great day!

This isn't the first time I hear of a 63 dropping a valve. Last time I saw it they also chose to replace the engine (which is $75k without labor). Good thing you have warranty

It's pretty insane but I saw the invoice. The worst part is the car was in the shop for almost 2 months waiting and then the engine swap only took a day or two.

if the MB warranty really is paying $75k to replace the engine, wouldn't it be cheaper for them to just buy the E63 from the OP? It's an 07, so it's worth $40k-$45k at the most... I know the wordings of my warranty say that if the repair is more than the actual cash value of the vehicle, the warranty company will buy the vehicle instead of repairing it

Do you have a source or link? That sounds really odd to me, and is contrary to what I've heard/read elsewhere - the M156 is significantly more advanced than the old M113.
Don't get me wrong, even $26k is a lot for an engine IMHO, but I'd expect the M113 to be a cheaper replacement than an M156.

Wow, that is scary that you would have major trouble like this with such low miles. Great News though that the warranty covered the cost of a new motor. This could be a lucky week for you. Play the lottery !!!

My friend bottomed out his 997 Carrera on a major pothole and cracked the block, it was considered an "accident" and his insurance company totaled the car because a new engine from Porsche was $60K...true story.

I've heard roughly the same for a brand-new M156 crate motor from the dealer (sourced from Germany, obviously). $60-70kish - insanely expensive.

FWIW the number I have seen tossed about during the class action lawsuit for our engines is $50k plus. Love my car, but when the warranty is up she's getting replaced.

So does replacing the motor impact the car's valuation? Does it hit CarFax or something like that?

I can't believe you just said that. Rarely have I seen an M113K motor go for more than $10K as of lately and that is less than half of a new one, which happens to cost what an ENTIRE E55 costs nowadays.

None on ebay.com at the moment but 10-15k is pretty standard on what they go for.
Plus I was speaking relatively, paying 26k new relative to 60-70k at the dealer is a bargain, regardless what a used e55 costs. Not to mention that the cars depreciation has little impact on the price of parts. A 10 year old benz can still carry 90k parts prices.

How's $5,500-$6,500 sound?
Again, anyone who pays $26K for a stock engine in a car that is valued at $26K is simply retarded, why even mention it? It's still 5 times more than a used engine and it's still in a $26K car.

You just need to learn how to search on ebay.

Why are you still talking about used e55's? I'll repeat myself and say I was referring to the price of a new engine that's roughly 60-70k new. If you can find a new engine for 26k that IS a bargain compared to the new price AND a better value than 10-15k for a used engine. The only reason I brought up the 10-15k vs 26k is because I was questioning the 26k price to begin with (as a new engine is probably closer to 60k anyway).

94k miles Find a clean one with under 50k miles. After shipping and tax or duties a decent low mileage engine is going to be around 10k. A couple years ago the cheapest you'd find was 10k easy.
