sometimes the ole beast just doesn't 'kick down'... WTF?

I let my buddy drive the 55 today at lunch and he tromped it around 20mph and it just laid down and pulled, but didn't shift into 1st and scream...

:nix: granted it pulled to 90 like a freight train, but was hoping for the drop-down, neck-snap first...

anyone else experience this?

AMG_RL 06-05-2012 07:04 PM

sneaky ecu reset.

Yes.

It knows your not driving, and won't let someone else "play" lol

BTW - I want to run your E55 with the ricer hooptie in my signature.

artowar 06-05-2012 07:16 PM

Maybe he thought that he put the pedal down, when he really didn't-- because somewhere, deep down, the Beast just terrifies him :)

Hey, everyone swears they're flat out at Eau Rouge, but the telemetry proves otherwise...

If your transmission is in C it won't downshift to 1st at 20mph. It must be in S.

cahiil55k 06-05-2012 10:18 PM

I can duplicate this issue anytime the transmission is still "cold". She won't shift 3-1 or 2-1. It's been happening since I got the car some 30K miles ago so I think it's normal at least for my ride. Sneaky "ecu reset" does not help. I usually just don't push the car hard until after 5-6 minutes of driving.

Then you may not be pressing the pedal down all the way until it clicks or your tranny is on it's way out.

Yeah, mine seems to do that sometimes when I'm cruising at about 50 as well. Seems like it should kick down into 2nd but doesn't think it goes from 5-3 not always but sometimes. I just use the stick shift feature if I want to be sure. Three quick bumps to the left and hammer the gas, and it's pulling like a fricken out of control monster!!!

03'55AMG 06-05-2012 11:09 PM

I seem to have the exact opposite problem, When i floor it, it kicks down into first then when i let off at about 3-4500rpms, it hangs in second gear for like literally 15 seconds, or until i do the right bump on the gear selector.

Bellevue_E55 06-05-2012 11:16 PM

just manual shift it next time.

Agree, he did not push the pedal down far enough. Had the same issue when I bought my e55 years ago. At low speeds it would get hung between gears when not pushed to the floor. There is a kickdown mode, just need to go pedal to the floor to trigger it. Kickdown will equate to a different experience.

This is normal, it's waiting to see if you romp on it again. It's great!

Yea, sounds amazing to after doing a blast and ending at a 45 mph cruise at 3-4 thousand RPM. I love this car

skratch77 06-05-2012 11:39 PM

I havnt felt first gear in years :(

yes, but I am trying to let a friend drive it - shouldn't take a user's manual to floor the gas to kick it down a gear

where is the kickdown button, on top or bottom of the pedal?

I have aftermarket pedal covers - maybe the screws holding them in place are not allowing the pedal down far enough?
I've STOOD on the pedal and it hasn't kicked down at times...

Lmao !!! ... Ya toad mine doesn't kickdown sometimes and I know I pushed it all the way down. Like stated above just manually downshift, or u can just practice slow rolls and find what exact mph to floor it at. I know what u mean sometimes when u hit it u just dont feel all the torque there and other times it's a pure monster :y

yup, just dissapointing when the guy driving the car says 'gee, my brothers Cobra pulled harder than this when you floored it'

of course, I drove home from lunch using the shift buttons and he grew to appreciate the beast a LOT more... but dammit, you shouldn't NEED to coax your car into a downshift!

That is interesting because I've never had this problem. It will downshift 100% of the time. :nix:

What is this, "first gear", that everyone speaks of?
