6.3L V8 engines
The 6.3l V8 that sits in my E63, is that the same lump that powers the SLS?
if it is, is the power difference that is developed from the 2 power plants soley down to Intake Exhaust Tuning Out of interest has anyone managed to get the same 570Hp out of their 63 engine that is not in an SLS? In know the 55 guys can get way past that, but as i found out this year when my 55 blew up with the Cylinder 8 detonation, it can have its price thanks |
Without going the Weistec route, Kleemann claims these numbers on their website for keeping the engine N/A:
63 AMG (M156) N/A 63-K1(N/A): A sophisticated new ECU software. Up to 540 HP and 650 Nm (481 lb-ft) of torque. 63-K2(N/A): K1 + a set of long-tube exhaust manifolds (front cat delete system, LHD cars only). Up to 575 HP and 720 Nm (533 lb-ft) of torque. 63-K3(N/A): K2 + a large throttle system and a set of hi-flow air filters. Up to 590 HP and 730 Nm (541 lb-ft) of torque. I haven't done the research, but doesn't the SLS have a whole list of engine mods? |

yeah, the 6.3 is a throwback name for something, it's actually a smidge over 6200cc (6208 i think).
...but it doesn't make me feel any less of a Dbag explaining it to people that compliment my "6.3 liter". |

The sls has all forged internals, different pistons, dry
Sump lubrication, just look at the intake, individual velocity stacks. I'll post some pics of it taken apart when I get home. |
These engines have some NA potential but it's gonna cost you. Weistec is expensive too but trust me it's more bang for your buck but ultimately the 63 is an expensive car to get power from. I'd get a Weistec to be honest.
It would be interesting if someone dropped the new 5.5 TT into their W211 but it would never happen, the engine will bolt right in but the electronics  forget about it. It's like Mercedes deliberately make it as difficult as possible to do any king of swap or custom build. |
I can only imagine the cost of a crate 5.5 TT... I don't want to imagine..

Yeah, or "Alas, poor Yorick" if you're the OP whose engine blew..
I did not know about the inherent problems with the fueling and had not addressed it, hence the bang - lessons learnt and all that. :smash: |

Here is the intake of a SLS, it is a 3 piece system. here the cover is off, the box is loose. Valve cover is also removed. I fixed a oil leak on it.

Here's the real 6.3 Engine (M100) in my W109. This is 50's technology right out of MB's race shop. Notice the dual plenums with velocity stacks. Timed mechanical Bosh fuel injection. The K4B 050 auto transmission shifts almost as fast as the new double clutch systems and is coupled to the engine with a full lock-up fluid coupler. I built this 1969 engine which had a significantly higher compression ratio and went to max oversize Mahle pistons which were Sanford Hard Coated. It's now about 6.5L. The heads were flowed, but no improvement could be made over the factory configuration. All I did was to replace the valve springs with modern Chevy springs and a three angle cut ( the exhaust valves are sodium filled). Notice the massive oil cooler on the driver's side of the radiator. The ignition is converted to optical triggering. So you are looking at about 60 year old technology. And don't forget the first self leveling air suspension system

That is the coolest thing Ive seen this week.

If I ever blew up my m156 in my w211, I would try to find a used m156, and get forged everything, pistons, connecting rods, you name it.
I think the SLS has Forged Internals, a nice tune, the multi clutch tranny connected to it, dry sump, blah blah blah and the intake portion is completely redesigned compared to mine, I'm sure it could fit though. |

ok, thanks for all the replies, really nice engine by the way.
Anyways it begs the question that does the 6.3 NA engine have any inherent problems similiar to the 55 engine that will rear its head when tuning the engine for more power. Once bitten twice shy says leave the engine alone, but my heart says power is the only way to go. Dont want another blown engine... |

WOW, really nice!
Aren't you tempted to Transform it into a red hog? http://bits4benz.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=48 While the entire drivetrain was completely rebuilt, I rarely demonstrate the brute force. Granted, that my W109 weighs about 3500 lbs (with about 15 gals in the 30 gallon tank) and has skinny tires by today's standard, at WOT you will get wheel spin from 2nd to 3rd even with the ZF. I'm confident the original never had cruise control. You can see the servo on the firewall to the right of the battery. Dave Chamberlain of Colorado restored all the woodwork Also, notice on the rear deck lid, there is a space between SE and L. Only on the W109 6.3. |
Thats a gorgeous car.
