Mobil 1 5w-40 turbo diesel oil?
 

Hey guys,

I want to do an oil change, and I've read to either use Mobil 1 0w-40 or 5w-40 oil. Searching at Walmart, I found 5 quarts of 5w-40 for $26. However, it says it's for turbo diesel trucks. Does anyone know if this will still be fine to use? Is the only important thing the viscosity of the oil, or are there any other additives in that oil specific to diesels, that could be harmful for my 55.

Just use what it calls for. You can use it but if something were to go wrong that's the first thing you would think of. The diesel oil has more additives in it to control soot and keep from foaming also.

Yea. That's what I figured... There had to be something different with that oil. Found some standard mobil 1 0w-40 at a decent price, and will be getting that.

I've used it before, it meets mb 229.51 spec so it's ok to use. What makes it different is added zink to help the bearings from the high loads of a diesel. Go on Mobil 1's web site and they list what the differences are.

5W-40 Diesel is not what is approved for the engine.
What is approved
5W-40 ESP (Emissions System Protection)

I use the 0W-40 since the ESP reduces the wear inhibitors.

Interesting. Luckily my STi won't have a problem with cat burning.

I run Rotella T6 5w-40 (diesel oil) in my Subaru STi and my previous WRX. I've put about 30k miles on the STi and I've put plenty of miles over 60k on the WRX with the Rotella T6.

It has the zinc which is the main reason many Subaru owners use it, and due to the high heat here in Arizona the viscosity helps out as well.

So has anyone successfully used the shell 5w40 diesel oil in a W211 AMG?

Holy crap, dude. Now you're bumping a 5 year old thread to find out if you can use oil made for diesels on your car. You're putting way too much thought into changing something that is not going to make a difference. Just use the OEM recommended fluids and move on.

The simple answer is that the original oil mentioned doesn't meet any MB specs so it's the completely wrong oil to use. Other Mobil oils mentioned may meet MB 229.51 or MB 229.52, but those are diesel oil specs and gasoline cars call for MB 229.5 which is a different spec. Mobil 1 0w40 has MB 229.5 approval. There's also a 5w40 that MB dealers sell, but I wouldn't bother, as long as it meets MB 229.5, you're fine. Some prefer Castrol 0w40 because that has both MB 229.5 approval and BMW LL-01 approval which Mobil 1 had at one point but their most recent formulation lost the BMW LL-01.
