Which Brake Pad Separating Tool do You Use?

I realized today when I tried to remove my front left brake caliper that it wasn't going to happen! My brake service tools are not ok for this caliper. Saw on this vid:

That he uses this tool:

Amazon Amazon

BTW, that's the cheapest I've found. $25 delivered (if you have Amazon Prime).

Is another tool better? You know if this one will work? I realize I did this in the reverse order but couldn't wait for input :-(

Most people would just keep the old pads in the caliper and use them to leverage with a large flathead. That way it goes back evenly without pushing out the other piston and nothing gets marked up. Tool would also work.

I've always been able to push the pads back in by hand or with a well placed flat head or small pry bar.

Also with this being a how to video he shouldn't be hanging the caliper off the hose like that. Ben up an old wire coat hanger to support it.

I need to reuse the pads. They aren't gone. Just need to remove caliper to get to inner wheel bearing. Would using flat screwdriver indent the pad or cause other damage?

use two pry bars to pry at the edge of the pads and use the curve of each prybar as leverage to push them apart.

I think i've heard of one of those . Don't want to dent pads, tho, because i'll be reusing. Wouldn't that dent them?

you use two prybars and pry the lip of the pad at the edge right next to where the pins go through.

OK, the OTC separating tool came and I had a chance to check it out. Verdict: scheisse! It's no good. Main beef is that the reach or span of the tool isn't wide enough unless the pads are worn very thin. I don't have a whole lot of pad left (maybe 1/4" on each pad) and it wasn't close to reaching. In the end I used the two pry bars trick from GT-ER. That was highly effective. Sending OTC tool back

i don't get the problem. Why are you trying to push them in?

If you are using the same pads, the clearance to the rotor doesn't change. All you should really need to do is wiggle them out and wiggle them back in. Any binding could be rectified with a small screwdriver.

When pads and rotors wear down they need to be pushed back to allow for the new thicker replacement parts.

I also use the old pad to push the pistons in.

Good questions. I'm not working on brakes. I'm getting them out of the way to get to the bearings. The brakes are worn to the point, though, that a lip has developed on the outside edge of the rotor that's big enough that I need to push pads back in to get them out.

ok, as mentioned above, a good sized screwdriver or pry bar against the top of the backing plate should get you enough clearance to get over the lip.
