Saw a black E55 today on the freeway
usually I don't see them on the freeway
here's my quick impression:
as much as the new body style is not really my type, the 55 definitely stands out i saw it coming at least a mile behind me, aggressive look from both front side and the quad exhaust reminded me of my old one in the vr4. The more I see them the the more I like the 55's bodylines, bodykit, and wheels as a whole package. I can't say that about the 500 though sorry. The 55 looked really good in it's stance too, it looked like it was lowered, but obviously wasn't (really old couple in it, nothing against that might as well enjoy retirement
with amg). The 18's double spokes made the car look at highway speed as if it'll never need to be lowered just look perfect. I wasn't in my car (it's all apart atm waiting for couple parts) but would have been nice to make some runs with it ( i doubt the couple would have stepped on it though 
).
Anyway, just wanted to share my quick impression that more and more likes this car.

I agree, I love the look, the stance and every angled view of the W211 E55. It is killer on looks alone. But I just can not fall in love with the look of the base models - the E320 & E500. Maybe I am biased because I am an AMG driver, an AMG enthusiats or because I pay close attention to small details. I think the 2003+ E320 & E500 look bland and ordinary with no street presense or aggresiveness or sporty look. AMG Body kits, rims & chromed quad exhaust are sorely needed on standard W211's.

Allow me to disagree with you guys.
I am an owner of a W211 E55 and the original style of the W211 E class when it first came out was the reason for me falling in love. Of course the AMG was a welcome addition to the family. Furthermore, when I look at whats available in the market now (i.e, 5 Series, A6, S type, Lexus, or even the new 5 Series), I love the E class even more.
Its mainly a taste issue I guess

I also agree that the "base" e500/e320 looks a bit too "soft" for my taste...
Just before I bought my '01e55 last month, I briefly considered an e500 with the sport pkg, but just couldn't get beyond the "vanilla" look of the car.
I love the aggressive look of the new e55's, but couldn't justify the sticker price!
