Custom Cold Air Intake

I currently run a Needswings CAI which I have been very happy with however my current mods have now exceeded its ability to flow enough air. Jerry was over in the UK and tuned my car and while on the dyno it was obvious that the car was being choked. Jerry pulled the filters off and I had 20 whp extra straight away. The problem could be the filters but they are also only 4inch diameter so not sure any replacements will do better.

Whats the best option

Build a new one from scratch
Add two large open filters (similar to the Weistec but x 2) but these will be sitting over the headers?
Use one filter just like the Weistec kit but again sitting over the headers
Get a Carbonio box

Main use 1/4 mile runs but also have a high speed run coming soon which is 1.8 mile straight from a rolling start.

Carbonio box and call it a day... all those other opions of the filter sitting on top of the engine sucking hot air dont seem like the best idea

I too have the needswing CAI but not sure what type of filters they have, when you pulled them what were they?? Maybe try BMC filters I have been told they are really good..

They are Spectre Performance filters

I might be selling my custom intake setup since it won't work with my new Weistec setup

I've built one from scratch. I used 3.5" piping for the y-pipe so it bolts straight up to the 82mm TB. As for the air boxes, for the exact reasons you posted I went with PRM Jet-Stream intakes, they are in a 15" long plastic housing and have a 4.5x12" inverted cone filter inside. The inlet of the airboxes can either be left open or further extended into the rad support with some piping They are made to order so a custom length can be made. They are around $150 a side. Hope it helps

Just found out I'm exact same boat.. Needswing CAI pull the filters 16 more RWHP:eek:.. Anyone with some more ideas would be appreciated.. Thinking of trying the BMC filters before changing but a not sure it will help.. Dyno does not lie... Looking for more options...

For what it's worth, I had the Carbonio airbox and track tested it against the factory 80mm Y pipe. Ran the same time down to the hundredth, on back to back runs.
As well, I spent alot of time smoothing out the inside of the Carbonio box so I'm certain I had a good example to test.

Carbonio is an option... Where should I go to get more AIR???? It was obvious that I had a pretty good restriction when they pulled the filters.. Jerry saw this in London a couple weeks back... I NEED MORE AIR... Question is how and whom to go with???:D

lowprofile 04-01-2013 11:16 PM

Did you baseline the factory setup? From what you wrote, all that you proved is that NW intake was causing a restriction.

Hulk 04-01-2013 11:20 PM

Use diff spectre filters, 4" instead of the 3"

jcjmw 04-01-2013 11:22 PM

I am having the same experience. I have a CAI with 2 six inch KN cone filters behind the grill. When I had the car dynoed months ago, it dynoed 15 more rwhp w/o the filters. I was thinking of having a y pipe made that also allowed a mushroom filter on top of the y pipe, in addition to also allowing the piping for the 2 six inch KN filters in behind the grill.

SilverStrk 04-01-2013 11:24 PM

Low,

No I did not, and Regret..... All I know is that I'm leaving HP on the table and don't like it..

Hulk,

4" is difinitely an option... Will look into it when I get back from Vegas......

JCJ,

See there HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY... We just need to figure it out... 15-20 rwhp is Worth it IMO....
