Want to mod, afraid of no traction/being much slower...
At the point where I want to pull the trigger HARD and mod her, but I am afraid of traction issues/no useful power, and just being slower because all the car does is spin.
My thoughts were the simple mods: 168/172mm, belt wrap kit, some mid length or LTs (Kleemann or EC/MBH), and a conservative dyno tune.
Everywhere I'm reading on the forum, it seems these mods make the car spin with anything more than half throttle below 50mph. That can be fun, but get old too.
I also don't want to be spinning when I need that power.
What are you modded guys doing ?
Will these mods just make the car spin and spin and slow her down?
Any feedback from the modded guys would be awesome. I don't want to mod and regret it because the car is slower.

HEADERS AND TUNE.
Then if you need more, throw on a 168/172 and re-tune.
And you won't have traction with all the above mods, even with wider street tires. DRs. On the freeway though, forget it, you'll haul the mail.

I vote headers, big throttle body and bigger heat exchanger no pulley. And a dyno tune with those mods. Car will be fast and not have to much torque down low causing a lot of traction control intervention and/or spinning.

This. This will also keep IATs down and keep the power available up top. If you feel the need for more later you can always throw a SC pulley on. IMO headers first on these cars.

I wanted to do headers and tune first, but I read everywhere about boost loss and the low grunt significantly hurt by long tubes or aftermarket headers in general. I don't want that; others say add a slightly bigger pulley for the low end torque loss.
What do you guys say?

how many F ing times are u gonna ask the same question !!!!
for the last time u Gain anywhere from 30-40Whp with headers so why are u worring about losing power ? get headers and tune of ur choice and dont be cheap on tires and u will be set

I didn't notice any torque loss even with my 1-7/8" primary headers. At least not any to complain about with these cars. I don't have the dynos on comparable machines to see the number differences.

Sterling-
What headers are on your car? I am leaning towards EC or MBH.
Tell me about the power, how it comes on, how the car sounds etc. Did you notice a power gain throughout the RPM range?
Thank you!

I have NPI headers. Good quality, decent fit (I had to clearance for the steering shaft myself.), horrible customer service. I don't like how low the EC headers sit. Others don't have issue with them it's personal preference. If I were to do it over again I'd probably go with kleemans. I don't think the others, while better quality and fit in some cases, are worth the added cost. They all sound similar. The sound is highly dependent on your mufflers. With the E55 mufflers the sound is mild but noticeably more throaty.

As far as mods, here's what I've found for a simple breakdown:
Tune: power everywhere - definitely noticable - will instantly getting you craving more
Headers: you will notice the loss in the low end - gain in the high end - depending on how often you spend time at triple digit speeds will determine how much of a power gain you feel - if you drive sanely most of the time - you're only going to notice more noise, and the low end loss which will lead you to. . .
Pulley: power everywhere (significantly so).
If you do the three - you really should do a HE. . .
If you talk to anybody who has done the following mods they'll usually say the only regret is that "I should have done it all at once rather than piece by piece". Don't forget, shop times are usually around 100.00+ dollars/hr and labor costs definitely add to the cost of modding.
For what's it's worth, I have a pretty fast 55 and I don't light up my wheels everywhere or really have any traction issues when it's warm out. . .
Hope that helps. . .welcome to the addiction!!!!!!!

For what it's worth. . .As I'm sure you've already found out, these cars will spin stock if you get into the throttle too much so honestly, whether or not you're spinning has less to do with the mods and more to do with your throttle control. Anybody who's telling you that they're lighting up the rears at half throttle up to 50mph is. . .slightly exaggerating. The only way I see that happening is if they're running dedicated summer tires in the winter at 30 degrees and they just got out of the garage and decided to hit it. If you live in a cold weather climate, get Conti DWS's for your winter set up (a member on here cut 11.4's in a modded SL600 putting over 650ft/lbs of torque to the wheels running those all season tires and I have close to 40,000 on mine and they're still not done).

Thanks brother - alive, doing better. . . still modding anything with an engine and wheels. . .. Same old story - two good people who unfortunately made each other worse, it's amicable, for the best and I truly wish her nothing but good fortune. Going to slowly start creeping back again. Hope all is well on your end!!!!!! (BTW - LOVE RAPTORS!!!!!!!!!!)

If you're afraid of just going slower and no traction, you should be scared stiff of breaking something. Modding is about the whole experience. If you're afraid then don't mod.
@Gunmoto, What's wrong with having headers in Cali?

I'm not sure if you're truly asking or if you're from Cali and being sarcastic. If it's the former, Cali is very strict about emissions and any modification to the emissions systems, in this case the catalytic converters, is against the law.

Just friendly sarcasm ... nothing more. I am in Cali and have headers as do a number of folks. For being strict I am surprised at the number of modded vehicles here, I had the same worry when I first moved here.
