Add me to the list of E55 owners with a strong intermittent fuel smell in my car. This just started about a week ago with the very cold ambient temps. I figured this leaking fuel tank business was going to manifest itself on my car sooner or later. Will pull the rear seat and look for evidence of leakage. Hoping I can seal the leak with some JB Weld or other goop vs. replacing parts that work just fine. Shame on MB for not owning this design flaw and putting customers at great risk and having the audacity to gouge them for thousands to try and correct it after their warranties expire. I was literally sick for 2 hours Monday morning after breathing those fumes driving to work.

does yours only happen when your fuel level starts to go down? i started my car in the garage today to jump my truck which was out side, and when i went into the garage low and behold....... fuel smell is back.... pulled the seat cushions again, no smell, and dry. gonna put it on the lift again today and hope i can replicate the issue.

I have the same issue. Please let me know what you come up with....
I too have the same smell on my 06 E55, checked both the sender and the pump under the seat, and nothing, dry and clean. I notice it only at initial start up in the morning, usually when the tank is near empty, filled it up yesterday and this morning I had no smell whatsoever. It seems there are more than just the under seat leak issues with these cars!

yup mine too, idling at a light, cold start, when car get down below half a tank thats when its the most frequent. im going to try to get to the fuel rail and see whats goin over in that area, its been raining here for days, so its been tough to see if anything is leaking underneath. Going to just start checking everything fuel related i guess. fingers crossed. ......

the dampener is by the cabin filter side of the vehicle correct? cause i swear the reason the odor is so strong is because its pulling through my cabin filter. will pull the intake and see whats going on there.

Bingo! That's where mine is leaking, strong fuel smell coming through HVAC vents, worse when cold outside with car idling. My rear sending units have no fuel pooling or evidence thereof. Does anyone have the part number for the pulsation damper gasket and is that all that needs to be replaced? I'm going to be pulling my supercharger off soon to install the 82mm TB and 550cc injectors and will just tackle this at the same time. Thanks

mrweelr its going to get worse, i would degrease that area and try to get some clear epoxy on there and see where it goes. Def look into getting it changed out in the future, or maybe call your local benz dealer and see if your cars vin is under recall to get the pumps changed out.
thanks for that pic of that regulator. gonna tear into the car today or tomorrow, sounds like we have/had the exact issue. does you car feel sluggish at times by any chance since this happened?

That looks like the right part, hope we don't have to buy the whole diaphragm to get a new seal/gasket. Let me know if you find the correct part number for the seal. Fuel leak in the engine compartment is a serious fire hazard not to mention those fumes, so I want to fix this as soon as possible

Tell you what, since I had said earlier that was what was causing our problem, I will give you a part number, since I still have the old part in my garage

Its easy to get out, there is a fork retaining clip that needs to be pulled out, then I used some light grip from a set of channel locks to get the old one out. once its out, put the new one in, might want to put a little oil on the o ring to make sure it goes in right. The fork retainer is kind of a pain to get in. I think that you are going to have to pull the fuel rail to get it back in. I pulled the whole rail and got my injectors rebuilt at the same time, as they kind of needed it.

is it the diaphragm that is actually faulty and leaking or is just the green o ring usually?
its been snowing and icy so car has been sitting at home the last 2 days, hopefully wednesday the roads will clear up so i can get the car back to work and start taking it apart.
Shardul where did you find the diaphragm for the price you stated? cheapest i found was $95 shipped.

Just to follow up, my driver's side fuel pump/sender assembly is stamped 2008 and shows no evidence of leakage. The passenger side unit is stamped 2004 and has a small hairline crack with some evidence of leakage, but no odor is coming from either unit with car idling. I'd like to seal that crack as a precaution, is this stuff OK to use?

Our M113 K engine had a fuel leak from either an injector or the little round regulator that sits on the back of the fuel rail. When on a road trip we would notice a strong smell of fuel when we stopped the car. I was initially thinking senders but since we had about 1/4 of a tank when it started it seemed it must be something else. After sniffing around, the strongest smell was coming from under the hood. Drove the rest of the way home, where I pulled the fuel rail and had the injectors rebuilt and replaced the regulator. No fuel smell since then.
Just had the same issue. Mine was spraying from the 2nd injector on the passenger side and dumping gas all down the back of the engine and inches away from the cat.
I changed all the o-rings and the Fuel Pulsation Damper.
It's not a hard job just time consuming (2-3 hours) you'll want new surge tank gaskets and one for the throttle body or use gasket maker on the old ones. Just be careful and plug the outlets from the inter cooler and tape the intakes on both sides of the engine so you don't drop anything in either. Also make sure each injector is lined up before pressing the back in the holes if you don't you crack on of the plastic pental caps and it will leak again.
