i'd really like to get to the track (finally) but I don't want to spend $$$ on something that I'll probably use less than a dozen times (famous last words eh?)

This one seems to be Snell approved and only $75 :y

Wayloo Snell/DOT Approved Motorcycle Helmet (Matte Black, X-Large)

yes, I know - my head isn't something to be 'cheap' about - but what do you guys use?

probably a few of you with color-matched helmets and wicked graphics too :nix:

For motorcycle or auto? Current Snell standards are SA2015 and M2015, respectively.

for the E55

here are the track rules:
  • All drivers must have a valid driver's license.
  • All vehicles must pass a basic NHRA ET Bracket safety inspection. For a full listing of requirements, consult an NHRA Rulebook.
  • A single co-driver is permitted in vehicles running slower than 14.00 seconds. Co-drivers must be at least 16 years old and must sit in the front seat.
  • All drivers and co-drivers must wear long pants and shirts with sleeves (no tank tops).
  • SFI /Snell approved helmets are required for all vehicles running quicker than 14.00 seconds.
  • Motorcycle racers slower than 10.99 seconds are required to wear a heavy jacket, gloves, full face helmet with visor, and shoes covering the tops of the ankles. Bikes faster than 10.99 seconds or 120 mph MUST have one piece or all around zip together full leathers. All bikes must run a chain guard covering entire top of chain
  • Drivers under 18 must have a waiver of liability form on file at the track and must be signed by parents to participate in Sacramento Raceway's drag racing events. Waiver can be downloaded from our site. Must be in full color and not folded. Bring the waiver to the track. Minor waivers are a once a year requirement.

I've always used Arai helmets for motorcycles but I assume you are looking for an SA helmet (EDIT: Yes, I see for the e55, lol).

I don't have an SA helmet but I've been looking at the HJC AR10ii, which runs about ~$300. The AR10ii is a full face helmet with ventilation for open cockpit racing. You can also consider expanding your search to an open face design (for comfort). Also check out Zamp and Bell, which are also around the same price point.

I'm sure the others here will chime-in on the first-hand reviews.

Go somewhere that you can try on helmets. You will discover that the one you love may not fit you as well as another. Sizes are common, but fitment is NOT.

Get a HANS while you are at it. Aren't you worth it?

Todd,

I just got a Bell GT5 helmet and have worn it twice. It's the most comfortable helmet I've ever owned. I've had Arai, Stillo and others, but my new one is my favorite. Mtc
