Finally got some CLS63 Mufflers - Quick Question
I FINALLY sourced some CLS Mufflers and they were 63 to boot!! But anyways I read somewhere a while back, can't find the thread again, that the CLS55/63 Mufflers hangers are located in the same place as our stock E55 ones. The only thing different is that the tips stick out like 1.5 inches further.
Is this correct?

I remember reading you need to trim the rear bumper on the inside exhaust tip area because the CLS exhaust runs more narrow. I can't say for sure though, I have c63 mufflers.

They stick out 1.5" further and sit in (towards center of car) about an inch. They also sit higher and will probably angle down.
Its really not a very good fitment unless you have someone really do it right and relocate the tips. I took mine off because the fitment looked like s h i t
Too high, angled down (retarded) sits in (Cut valance) and pokes out
Uggg

I have a pic of the two mufflers side by side, and how much further they stick out. Also, I did not have an issue with them being too far centered and did not have to cut the valence in the center

CLS55 on the LEFT and E55 on the RIGHT
Top View of how they stick out
From Behind
Compared to stock Mufflers...Stock on the LEFT....CLS55 on the RIGHT
From the side, how they stick out
I think the mufflers would stick out too far, if it wasn't for the diffuser that I have. With this diffuser, the stock mufflers were way too far in, the CLS55 mufflers are almost just right, maybe a bit out but for the sound they make who cares!
Hope that helps!

Yours sit out a little more than mine did. I did have mine pulled in as far as I could (moved everything forward at resonator) which fixed the "poking out" issue. No way I could have put that diffuser on.
But the thing I disliked most (I could live with the other things) was that the tips angled down. Your is not as noticeable with diffuser, but in side shoots its exactly like mine was
Every time I came out of the store, or caught a glance of the rear of my car it was all i saw. Drove me nuts. Since it was a little louder than I wanted anyway, I was happy to go back to stock, and now every time I see the back of my car I say: Thank goodness

The thing that gets me is the housing is identical so im dying to know how they are different internally to get that sound.

lol for real, **** is def not difficult. If you cant weld it up yourself, the muffler shops can. But ill buy those off you if you want to sell? or trade mine, maybe cash on top? mine will bolt right up and you"ll prob like it

The biggest difference is the E55 mufflers are packed with fiberglass. Back in the day before the 63 mufflers were available, dudes used to open them up and remove the packing. If you search for gutted mufflers, there's a few success stories.

I know that, I just want to see inside a set of gen ones so I can replicate exactly that on mine or make some improvements.

Would be fun to see an open cut out of the CLS55, CLS63, and C63 Mufflers
They all have a different note and get progressively louder.
In the CLS55 mufflers I had: I loved the sound when starting. Low throttle was good / WOT was awesome. But there was a mid point where the car was 100% louder than it needed to be for the amount of power I was applying. If that was not there, I would have resolved the fitment issues.
If I would have been looking from the outside I would say: HAHA Try Hard!!

I'm not sure how the E63 and E55 mufflers compare, but I can say that my stock E63 was not that loud. Even with the resonators removed it's not that loud, but sounds nice. I'm contemplating swapping my E63 mufflers for C63.

No bueno, stock looks the best. CLS stick out too far.

I have the E ones on my CLS and they absolutely do not fit well. They are "fatter", for want of a better word, not angled enough and despite many, many hours of fettling, welding, cutting, relocating, the left one still bangs on the body sometimes and the tips just never looked right.
However, the E55 and the E/CLS/C63 mufflers are very different inside.
The E55 ones have 2 separate chambers and lots of bent and perforated piping inside, along with tons of packing.
The 63 ones just have an X, straight out to the tips.
One end of the X is closed off and I believe acts as a Helmholtz resonator, with some perforation and the other which is the inlet, goes straight to the tips.
