What is this camera doing here?

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places but I can't find what this camera is doing installed in the rear vision mirror - at least I assume it's a camera? I don't want to come across as paranoid but it is nice knowing what things are in the car for. :nix:

That is not a camera, but more of a sensor.

This sensor measure the light from the car behind and darkens the interior mirror so that you do not get the glare from the lights of the car behind.

It's a camera. They are installed on random cars (not just Mercedes) to monitor driving habits using wifi signal to send the information to the US traffic control. This study was approved by the govt several years ago, just not made public. How do I know? Well, I was part of the implementation team. This study was approved to run through the end of 2015.

It's also an breathalyzer which monitors alcohol level of drivers. That information would be crucial after an accident.

I was wondering who was going to spill the beans first.

Please pay no attention to these guys...It's a Retina Scan!

HeissRod 10-24-2014 08:35 PM

You know why the camera is there? Because you're holding it facing a mirror.
