E55 Amg auto gearbox problem
I own a 53reg e55 Amg which has a problem that it takes about 3secs to engage from neutral to drive that has now triggered the engine management light, I took it to merc to have gearbox service but no improvement!
Any ideas would be appreciated!

OK if it is not electrical and I do not think it is it could be hydraulic.
These are facts. The transmission has whats called adaptation strategies. Meaning the "electronics" will "see" what the clutch pistons are doing in "real time".The ETC, Electronic Transmission Control module or TCU as we call it along with the ECU will monitor how long a shift into gear from park, neutral or an up shift will take. As the transmission clutch packs wear out, the speed at which the clutch piston applies the the clutch's for what ever gear has to be turned on so to speak is increased. If the clearance is to great you will begin to get delays or "slips" into gear. Remember the computer wants the clutch packs to come on as fast as possible but as soft as possible. This is why most transmissions that fail happen instantly most of the time with no warning. The computer can no longer "adapt" to the exsessive clearance and the trans will either go to limp mode and sky rocket the pressure to lock it in gear or stop moving all together , or slip. You may have a problem and not no it for a long time because the TCU is "compensateing" for it until it no longer can. I think your clutch clearance is to much and this is where you are at right now. The piston is taking to long to "fill" and "stroke" up against the clutch pack. I hope its electrical but don't believe it is...unfortionatly. A worn pressure regulator bore will also do this but will effect other shifting as well. These transmissions are very easy to rebuild if you have basic mechanical skills. Do not be afraid !! good luck.

I had a very similar problem with my E55 the electro plate that sit in the gearbox needed to be replaced.
once this was replaced the vehicle worked perfectly.

I had issues before with my transmission (high pitched whine at 2k rpms which no acceleration) and changed he conductor plate. Two months later I have another problem. Now the car won't shift automatically out of 2nd gear, but manually I can shift gears. Weird! When the mechanic changed the conductor plate he said he found no metal shavings at all. Any ideas?
