The wide world of pulleys...
So I've been out of the 55k world for a few years. I recently picked up a low mileage 03 SL55 and would like to throw a pulley and tune on it. Back when I had my few SL55's there was only one option for pulleys and that was the crank/lower pulley. Now I see that there are a couple of different kinds and would like some help determining what is what. I've honestly spent 3-4 hours reading various posts here on the forum but still am somewhat confused.
I see that there is now an 84mm supercharger pulley with a clutch, a supercharger pulley with no clutch (77, 80, 83, 89), and the regular old crank/lower pulley. I want to stay with one of these new supercharger pulleys but am unsure of which one to get. The only mods that I want to do with the car is a pulley, tune, Bosch IC pump, K&N's, and a resonator delete. Which pulley should I go for? Does the clutch-less pulley have all of the kinks worked out now? It seems like the 84mm supercharger pulley is the safe bet but it only gains 35-45rwhp? I thought a tune/pulley netted a lot more than this? I want the maximum amount of power from the car while remaining safe and daily drivable. Please share your thoughts! :zoom: |
You cant go wrong with the size pulley. Great power to be had with minimal .

I have a 83 clutchless for sale if interested

Smaller sc clutched pulley will be like a 168 crank pulley

yes that sounds right and rwtq increase is the same

I'm still having the debate which one is safer. When the clutched Scp came out it seemed like the safe way to go over all the wobbling problems of the crank pulley.. Now I'm not sure. In the end I will probably do the supercharger pulley first then go to a complete stage one with crank pulley later on. From what I have gathered the sc pulley adds 35-45 and you can feel more down low. While the crank pulley is 45-60 hp and its a beast up high.

Crank pulley will give alittle more tq

These gains look pretty stout (also higher than 45/45) for just a 84mm pulley and tune. Are these results pretty accurate or is the best case scenario?

If you have the money I think the stage 1 with 180mm crank pulley is the way I would go. Comes with ic pump and heat exchanger
|
yes do 180mm crank pulley, and upgraded heat exchanger. But don't do johnson pump, it's worse than updated oem bosch pump.
I have 84mm upper pulley, and it's not enough. Going to just 180mm crank soon. |

I had a 180CP and a OEM supercharger pulley. Downright mental. It was a total blast. I went back to the OEM crank pulley so I wouldn't have to worry about fueling issues, or blowing a cylinder. I just like peace of mind.
I loved the 180CP. |
I really just want to do the 84mm clutched pulley and tune for safety. However, this dyno graph is burned into my memory and I can't help but think how much happier I'd probably be with the 77 clutch less pulley. How in the **** did they get over 125 torque at the wheels from just the pulley and tune, is this real life?!

Eurocharged,
Is it possible to vent/open the bypass valve slightly at idle in order to stop the supercharger blades from rattling? This is on reference to the fixed pulley without the clutch. |
I'm going with 84mm clutched. Couldn't pass on the deal in classifieds.
Saving for a Eurocharged tune now. Can't wait..... |
Just wondering if you can send in your ECU and have Eurocharged flash it. I have had bad experiences from flashing an ecu in the past.
Only mod i have would be 84mm clutched pulley. Thanks |
Does Eurocharged still offer an 84mm clutched pulley?
|
Yes to both of you guys
|
I was thinking to install 84mm S/C pulley to my E55. What belt do you recommend? New stock belt or shorter? Crank pulley is stock and I do not have "Belt Warp Kit".
EC ECU upgrade might be a good thing, maybe. :y |
goign through the same decision right now with my 03 e55.. want more power, but need to have it reliable..
|
Really depends what type of increase your looking for. You said reliable I'm not sure many would say any are really reliable. The clutched SC pulley is the "safest"
