I've torn down a good number of these motors by now, but this one takes the cake. Since I wasn't in the car when it happened, any guesses on how it happened would be pure speculation. Crank and rods are still good

what block did you end up using on your previous build? is this the same one?

This is common when taking heads off of engines, any liquids caught in head passages can end up in the cylinders on top of the pistons. Like I said, I wasn't there so I can't suggest a root cause. Given the extreme liner damage though, I'm sure coolant mixed with oil at some point.

I'm pretty confident it's a 55k block but I'll check part numbers when I get home. This was not in my personal car, the motor came to me like this. I have a 5.0L bare block with 5.4L internals in my car right now, runs well

There must be huge amounts of heat involved.. How comes all bores do crack? The Pressures in these cylinders must have been huge. I know only of cases with incompressible mediums like water, that Pistons and stuff cracks, rods bending and so forth.
I really would like to know the cause of that terrible look.

Also i heard in German AMG forums that cracked Pistons are also quite common on these engines and the engines do still run more or less normally often with that damage. Have you heard of that aswell in the US?

If water had made it's way into the combustion chamber, wouldn't it have "steam-cleaned" the piston during combustion?

I've killed some ringlands on stock M113 and M113k pistons, and the car still ran.





Depends on how much water and how fast it came in. I'm curious how many noticed they're not stock Mercedes pistons... lol

Crazy, noticed they aren't stock pistons from your pictures. I've seen some high HP force induction motors blow holes in the block from hydrolocking at high rpms and unknown partial flooded engine compartments. And similar carnage from more then 1 car that was spraying tons of meth and either the nozzle tip blew off or pump not turning off. And of course seen similar from mega shots of NOS.

Still pretty wicked damages to an open deck block.

Detonation. You can see specs on the tops of the pistons and that is the giveaway. When an engine detonates the cylinder pressures skyrocket. The best parts money can buy will still fail when pressures exceed there limits. The engine will just self destruct at high rpm and it will happen so fast there is nothing you can do.

I have some jb weld you can use

I have seen JB Weld using to repair a cylinder. Knock caused the head gasket to fail and hot gasses pushed through and eroded the aluminum on the back side of the liner. The guy filled the missing aluminum with JB weld and evened it up with a razor blade and put it back together. Drove it for 2 years until he cranked the boost up again.

This was on a 4.0L Tacoma. That JB Weld patch held nicely until he over boosted it again years later.
