2004 E55 AMG
New guy here with intake questions
Hi guys I just picked up a 2004 E55 and am going to start with some light modding. first order of business is going to be a custom intake( and by custom I don't mean a bunch of spectre parts hacked together) looking at 4" to inch transition either 6061 aluminum or 304 stainless most likely 6061 for heat soak reasons, my question is would any type of tune be needed or can the factory ECU compensate for the increased airflow. Thanks guys appreciate any help

Actually if your stock the factory intake is good, maybe add an S55 snorkel because it's bigger like the passenger side but really you will not get much if anything for a stock configuration

There's some pretty good custom intakes floating around. But until you upgrade the throttle body the only thing you gain is sound. Which I will say is worth it. But I'd do everything at once (TB and intake) if you're going to do it. The biggest issue that's routinely neglected in these cars is cooling. The factory intercooler doesn't cool or flow very well so you really have to manage the air and water going into it. Headers also really help with cooling and the factory logs are quite restrictive. Depending upon which set you go with there's 30-40whp to gain. Happy modding and welcome.

The intake isn't really a restriction on this car until you start making big numbers, unless you want additional noise I would leave it as the "last" mod instead of the "first"
Cooling
Pulley
Headers
Throttle Body
And youll be bangin

These members speak the truth, the factory air intake is not the bottle neck, and the air filter box is pretty clean.
The low hanging fruit is pulley + Tune, then cooling, then headers + retune, then throttle body and air box work.
The best time to mod the intake is along with a larger throttle body, because you will need the larger "Y" and one of the aftermarket (Renntech, VPR) hi flow carbon fiber air filter boxes is a nice addition.

Since you on stock power just drop in a set of K&N 's and buy a second passenger side intake tube and put it on the driver's side. As others have stated the stock air box flows really well.
