So out of the blue my front left strut blew up!?

I was sitting in my living room upstairs above my garage watching TV and i hear a loud pop . took me 10 minutes of investigating around the house to realize that the pop came from my car as the compressor tried to keep pumping the strut but . pulled the large orange fuse, luckily i bought a set of front and rear bags a few months ago as a back up.

The problem is that my car is at home and i will have to do this on my garage floor vs lift at work and all my tools are at work. what tools do i need to bring with me to make sure i dont have to drive around all day getting what i need?

jack
jack stands
ball joint tool,
socket set
basic tools
star computer in case i need to raise or compress air strut?

Anything else i should check or do while im under here?

will use
as my guide.

Now my next question why the hell did this pop at 64k? is it because im lowered with star? i lowered it about 3/4". are the rest of these balloons going to be popping soon too?

im planning on heading home around lunch how long should i expect to be at this for?

You need to figure out why the compressor kept pumping.
-Sometimes the small wires connecting to the pump get chafed and this will not allow the pump to release air
-Maybe it was it a bad solenoid in the strut itself

Otherwise, replacing the strut is quick. You shouldn't have to pop the ball joint, you could just undo the three nuts on the upper arm. It's a tight fit getting the new one in, but it's doable. Helps if you have a helper to put the strut in place while you push down on the LCA.

I believe the torque specs are:
-30nm for the three upper strut nuts
-2nm for the airline
-165nm for the bottom bolt

If you have the AMG OEM strut you will not need to remove the balljoint, if you have an Arnott then you have to remove / split balljoint, the Arnott struts are longer than the AMG struts.

the compressor kept running because of the blown strut. thats how i figured out my car was the culprit of the loud pop. the ones i bought are amg as well apparently only a year old .

I had a failure last year on a bumpy road. It sounded like a gunshot and my car dropped very quickly. I thought it was a tire until the IC went red. My pump kept running even though the car was off (IIRC ~30 seconds per unlock/start). It took me roughly 45 minutes to swap them on a lift in the garage (jack stand would suffice). I removed the inner wheel liner, 3 bolts holding the UCA, and all the bolts on the shock. The compressesed/failed slid right out, however the new (OEM AMG) was a bit extended and had to use my leg to push the LCA down to get clearance. I slide the upper part into the fender and put the nuts on loose (one or two rotations, just enough to hold it) and then used a long skinny pipe against the LCA to compress the shock and slide it into the hole quickly.

It's really not hard, it'll all come together once you start to unbolt things. Very easy and should not be intimidated to tackle this project. Use teflon tape around the air line and DON'T OVER TORQUE THE 3 NUTS ONTOP OF THE SHOCK. I was pretty easy on those and still snapped one off.

I am not 100% sure. I would assume the same since I didn't specify which side when I bought mine. Seemed to work just fine. Lug both home, better than having to go back to the office!

Did you follow my DIY and let the air out of the strut?

i missed that part somewhere, its ok turns out the upper ball joints are ready for replacement as well after getting them free, luckily i remembered i had those pre ordered and at work as well. Going to button her up today after work, was close to 100 yesterday with brutal humidity, didnt feel like driving back to work for the ball joints and was tired of sweating bullets lol. pretty straight forward job though, the most difficult part so far was removing the fender well lining and unclipping the dampener connector lol.
