Black Smoke - 2ND Gear Pull
Getting on the highway this morning.
Here is the status of the car.
Fuel: 22 miles Range
Engine Temp: ~almost fully warmed up
Mods: Listed in Signature
Oil: Fresh
Plugs, wires, etc: Fresh
Maintenance has been done religiously.
Situation: I get on it today on the on ramp and a huge plume of black smoke comes out the back right when I get into the boost (3-4K). I cannot get the smoke to come back (I haven't really tried though). It was a simple 2ND gear pull, probably 75% throttle. I usually short shift the car since I don't like taking it to the max all the time. It rarely sees redline. I shift around 6,000RPM
Thoughts?

Out Of Control!!
How did it feel in terms of power? Black or blue smoke? I would do a compression test and leak down if you're really worried about it. Pull a plug and look at it if you're feeling lazy, if you see oil on it it's not a good sign. Could be just your car running rich but it wouldn't be a huge plume of smoke

Idles fine, rev's fine (no smoke in free rev) and full power. It appeared to be black. I was looking at the rear view mirror as I laid into it (I look to check every now and then) and saw a plume and let off the gas. Went a few miles and kicked it back down and no smoke. I am de-catted so I expect a little more "action" out of the exhaust pipes

Black smoke is almost always because of unburnt fuel. Other cars I have had it was caused by a bad or failing injector or fuel pressure regulater. Not sure what is common cause on an e55.

I'm about to leave. It's dark so I may just baby it until day light. I am thinking carbon build up (I have no idea how), oil blow by through the PCV, or the one step colder plugs and it's getting colder out (stock pullies). I got it tuned when it was 98*F and now it's in the 60's.

Several code starts and no smoke. It's been cold and rainy the past two days and hasn't smoked and no loss of power. I had one hot start where the car stumbled right when it fired but idled fine. I cut it off and let it sit for a second and did another hot start with no stumble. It still feels 100% except for the fact that I can't really get past 50% throttle without the back tires breaking loose. No smoke or strange sounds under hard rev's in P or N.
I am booking a compression/leak down this week. If anybody has any other ideas let me know. It was a plume of smoke getting on the highway under heavy load in 2ND gear. Car did not stumble or sound strange when it happened. Just some smoke

What are you looking in the rear view mirror floor, put your foot through the floor board and hold on
I bet it was just some carbon build up coupled with unburnt fuel exiting the exhaust. Leak down will definitely put you at ease.
