Specific tire question, Anyone running 285 MPSS of E55 rims?

I just bought a new set of wheels for my other toy and so i have a brand new new of 225/285 Michelin pilots super sports that i dont want to go to waste or age out. The fronts are 225/35/18... to small, but the rears are 285/35/18

The are a little wide and a little tall, but i was curious if anyone here has installed this exact tire on the stock e55 rear? pics?

There is a thread where this is talked about. If I remember right, some members with oem wheels have run 285/35 on the stock rear wheels.

Yah, not a single picture any any of the 5 threads i looked at here. I may just have the installer pop a tire off and install them and take a look. I've had dozens of set of tires over the years and learned that one brand 285s can measure a much different then another, or fit on rims very differently

I'm not sure how helpful this comparison may be.....but, I run Michelin Pilot Sport AS Plus in 285/35/18 on CLS55 wheels (9.5" wide) and you can hopefully tell how much the sidewall is really parallel to the rim. I know the SS is a different profile but you can imagine the bulge on a rim 1/2" narrower. Hope this helps.....I had a similar difficult time finding images of this particular set up on a stock suspension.

SGF04,

You really need to to clean your car up and take better care of it (smiley face)...
Welcome to the forum.

The car in this thread APPEARS to have some bigger tires on the back. Not sure of the exact size. PM him for details.

MNM5ETR,
I appreciate the welcome. I can't believe it's taken over a year of lurking on this forum to join and actually post a comment.
I know - I've got to get my act together and start taking better care

Expect rubbing. They bulge on stock rims too. Mine rubbed even with rolled fenders.

the bulging also caused them to wear out something fierce lol. I go through tires fast but this was the worst. Now I'm aftermarket wheels and 275s.

210lvr -

Did yours rub on the inner fender well or outer fender with the 285s/stock wheels? Is your car lowered?

With the more aggressive offset I could see how mine would rub the outer at a lower height even though my fenders are rolled. With stock height, I don't rub even on speed bumps, curbs, etc.

Just wondering how a stock wheel with 285/18s could rub the outer when it's tucked in further.

I really dont think they will rub, 285 is only .4" wider per side and the stock wheels on mine e55 are tucked what looks like 2" in from the fenders simular to a Winnebago. lol

If i buy new tires, it will be 275/35 and run spacers to put the tire near the fender, im only considering the 285/35 since i already have them on my 355.

I installed the 285s on stock rims then set my ride height with the new tires to fill in the fender gap. Even raised up to get a nice wheel well filling for the 285s I was still lower than factory. I like my wheels to have a nice even gap all the way around the fender so that should give you a idea on ride height. They only rubbed the outside fenders. I would get rubber on the outer fenders only, I never saw any on the inner.

It got got pretty old and embarrassing when I had passengers. however as I daily my car and know where the dips in the road are and which freeway on/off ramps I like to boogie on I would use the airmatic raise button to raise her up and stiffen up the suspension to keep it up in the nice part of the stroke before I got aggressive. This reduced the rub to almost nothing but I could still hear it if I really pushed it. In the raised position she looks like an SUV but this was the only way to reduce the rubbing.

Your mileage may vary and I would think there will be slight variations in cars to where you or someone else might not rub. Either way they did look kind of goofy on the stock rims cause they bulged. In fact, I guess it's possible that bulge is what was causing the rub and if they were mounted on a 9.5 rim the tire would be more straight and not rub? Not sure, just fishing.

they are only .4" wider but they are also taller. Mounting them on the stock rim causes them to bulge and I think now that the whole bulge gets pushed out further than if it were on a properly sized rim. Or it could be that being taller means the top of the tire is already closer to the fender so when the suspension is compressed the angle can't change fast enough to compensate for the taller tire and it won't tuck properly. I'm 99% positive if it were a 30 series I would of been fine except for the aesthetics. Also note I am only talking pss. I do not have experience with another brand in 285. I know in the dirt bike world Michelin plays with their tire sizing and they are usually either bigger or smaller than the tire indicates. annoying when you buy a 130/90/19 and it's smaller than a 110 lol

Buuut, like I said before your mileage may vary and I'm just fishing for answers really. I'm happy with my current rim setup and tire sizing and no rub

I have always +sized my tires to get a bulge on the sidewall both for looks and as kerb protection. I hate flush or recessed tire sidewalls. 285 x 35 /18 are standard size on the SL55 9.5inch rims and fit nicely on the 9.0 inch E55 rims with nice kerb protection. They are a taller tire which fills out the wheel well. I have now put SL55 wheels on my E55. The rears had to be machined 9mm to increase the offset and bring them in.

I have a set of newly gunmetal colour, powder coated E55 wheels for sale in Oz. These are the wheels in the image.

Thanks
Those look great, the sidewall looks shorter than i expected, almost 30 series.

I ended up placing a order for 245/275 continental extreme DW since they are on deep discount right now. Figure i will sell the almost new 225/285 MPSS

I have had very good past experience with "going wide"

original 255/275 on 9/9.5" these are 275/305

original 265/40 on 10" here are 285/35 mpss
