Mobil1 0W40?

flying down to Houston on Friday to drive my newly purchased 2008 E63 AMG back to Chicago. On my 2000 E55 I used Mobil 1 0W 40, as recommended by several sources.

Question: is the same weight/viscosity recommended for the 2008 E63? Asking because I'll be changing the oil before hitting the road so I'd like the best advice you guys can give me.

I'll admit I'm probably overthinking this, but I want to be sure...

Yes....absolutely this is recommended by both Mercedes and AMG. There is also a sticker in the middle of the radiator support that states that as well.

Yes, MB has changed their recommendation for use to either 0W40 or 5W40.
The only differences between the two is there operating range. I personally will continue to use 0W40.

Saving a few bucks on an oil change is not worth the peace of mind and doubt I would get from using Wal-Mart brand oil.

Do you really think a company like Mobil 1 would sell different standard oil to different vendors?

It's the same exact price on Amazon too...

EDIT: No I meant Mobil 1 from Walmart is just as good as Mobil 1 from Autozone. I don't know if you know about that whole deal... google it.

I was at my neighbor mechanic who sells Liqui in his shop and he was trying to sell me that stuff at $12 a liter on the premise that Walmart Mobil 1 is not the same as real Mobil 1.. no thanks man, first off I can get it on amazon for less, and again, companies like Mobil 1 who have Formula 1 presence would not gamble like that.

Ok, that makes more sense. Your post reads as if you were promoting Wal-Mart's own brand of oil.

No, Mobil1 is not making a Wal-Mart specific grade of their oil, like electronic companies make Wal-Mart specific models.

I am, on the other side switched from 5w40 to 0w40 and I like it much better. It doesnt consume much oil as it used to and it reaches the operated temperature 81°c faster. I feel like it runs smoother and enjoy the ride more.

Several years ago, I attended a AMG Tech session, that included representative from Mobil1. They discussed their oil in full detail with PowerPoint; how their oil is made, their various formulations, viscosity, operating temperatures, etc. Most people don't even know the three purposes of motor oil. Think about that for second or two. Do you know......Well if you don't, here it is. Oil lubricates, cools, and cleans your engine, that's it. So Mobil1 0W-40 is the best oil for your vehicle period, besides that is what Mercedes-AMG recommends. And that is what I will continue to use in my E63, and nothing else. In fact I use Mobil1 in my Audi as well.

Mobil 1 is garbage more so that 0w40 is like using crisco oil..it's more for a stock car and once you start to mod and raise boost that mobil breaks down so fast it's a joke.

The new oil from benz is a 5w40 which is shell (rotella t but made to benz specs. So the oil you buy from walmart is not the same as this dealer type.

It's got very high anti wear properties to go along with doing the switch. If you think mobil 1 0 40 is a good oil not sure what to say ,that means you have not been around high powered cars before. No offense to many buy from reading and being around these e55 for while many never had a 500 whp till now.

Do the switch and bet you the car will be smoother, feel stronger till your end of you oil change, quieter ,not burn really and will not break down too.

So you recommend 0w-40 Rotella T? Or 5w-40...

The dealer obivously use 5w-40 and like the user above said if you want the non-diesel 5w-40 you HAVE to go to a dealer. Otherwise store bought 5w-40 is diesel only no?

I've heard good things about shell's oil...

I mean, how harmful can it be to rotate oils between oil changes? One time use Motul, the next use Castrol EDGE, then use Liqui, then use Shell, then MObil.. just use them all I guess.

Stick to the benz 5w40 the bottle has a piston on blue and black bottle, that's the the shell rotella t built for benz specs not for diesel.I wouldn't keep switching so much since the bearing can cause issues from different oil

gotta love oil threads. I've read a bunch. My take away is this, if you drive like a motorist use Mobil1 or any oil that meets or exceeds Mercedes specs., if you drive like a member of the Force family, you owe it to yourself to research oils. Some lubricate better than others and in tests where wear is tested under extreme conditions this becomes evident. In my research an oil that exceeded Mobil1's ability to limit wear (called a four ball bearing test, and Mobil1 allowed four times more metal loss) was Valvoline full synthetic European formula, and there were others (Amsoil ESP synthetic for European was slightly better but harder to find unless online). But in the end, it's just oil. So as our president might say, "use good oil."

Oil threads are the best. I love when people say "I really like "xxx" oil. " Then provides no addition info on testing, comparisons etc

BTW what part of Chicago are you in?
