Who has stiffer springs on their BC Racing coilovers?

I'm still sorting out the coilovers and I would like to hear from anyone who felt the need to go with stiffer springs than the standard BC springs.

Why did you go stiffer?
What spring rate did you choose?
Front, rear, or both?
Did it help?

Ever since going the coilover route my car bottoms-out on the front very easily when going over speed bumps; it never did that with the airmatic, event though I have the ride height set about the same as the airmatic in lowered mode.

Also, the car feels a little "bouncy", even after making several adjustments to the preload.

How much tighter did you go than 3-5mm on the preload?

I am dealing with the same upfront, I softened it up for DD mode to about 15-18 up front and it helped about 20% but still leaves me wanting more.

There was someone who jumped from BC 900lb spring to a BC 1000lb spring up front. I cannot wait for them to chime in

I have long tubes so speed humps are more like stop humps and slowly roll over them as gentle as possible. I am slightly lower than sport ii and it will still drag if I am not careful

Sounds like we are in the same boat.

I have not changed the front preload from whatever they came from the factory. I had to play around with the rear preload quite a bit, but I did see some improvement.

I talked with the guy at BC and he said I might want stiffer springs but I'd like to hear from someone first-hand who has done it.

I'm having the same situation with my d2 rs coilovers. Installed last month and can't seem to get the adjustment correct after several attempts. I'm taking them out and switching to kW street comfort coilovers (1825005). Spoke to several distributors who all say the kWs will be a lot better than the d2s. I'm not tracking the 55 so street comfort is exactly what I need. Enough is enough. Costs more but a Change is needed immediately. KWs ordered today:D:D

I always wondered if they were using the same spring rate for the e55 as they were the e350. I assume that E350 must be much lighter in the nose.

I just looked at the KW site, same PN for either car. Makes sense the front would be undersprung

I moved from the 900 to 1000lb spring up front and it made a huge improvement in nose dive and cornering. You will have to stiffen the adjustment more than normal to eliminate bounce as well.

CharlyE500 06-14-2017 08:06 PM

I use 15 clicks in the front and felt exactly the same as Airmatic Confort. I will adjust to 18 to 20 clicks soon.

I just got my e55 a month ago but I noticed the front loved to bounce up & down on the highway home so I turned my BCs all the way up to hard which makes my ride a lot stiffer and no more bounce so I'm happy.

I knew it was someone, didnt know it was you! you sir are a bad@ss

Did you change the preload it came with?

BC and Megan come preset for our car and when you change that it's a ***** to get it back right

I just use the dampening
I never touched the preload setting it came with and rides perfect

Did you elect for the swift upgrade?

Thanks Will !! Hows that trans coming along ? Wish I was closer to you to help out.
So the real test will be in a couple weeks with the 1,000lb springs at Pocono track and hopefully no turn in suspension dive.
It has banked turns !!! ABSOLUTELY fantastic at speed although it will only be the shut down section after the 1/2 mile run. Still some cars will be over 200+mph so it's awesome to watch. !!!:zoom:

I have not changed the preload on the front, but I did on the rears because I was trying to follow instructions, which required making the shock about 9 turns longer. I have since shortened it back up by about 5 turns and it's better. I may go all the way back to 9 and see if that helps more.

No, I didn't know that was an option. Can you elaborate? I've never heard of that.

I believe I paid approx 250 for the upgrade at the time of coilover purchase which included the proper valving. SWIFT are Lighter, more consistent springs. Personally for the money, assuming you're valved for it, it a great bang for the buck. Otherwise, step up to KW's.

I chose to get the standard rate in a swift spring and was pleasantly surprised with the improved control of my Lexus LS430 UL. Stoping distance improved, turn in is more consistent and relays good feedback, and rough roads aren't jarring. For the money, well balanced IMHO. I refrain from touching preload and focus on dialing in the valve response front vs back.

Whoops, dont know how I missed this...

Dang summer's are busy times with an 11 year old not in school!

I hope to hear you got a good track test in!! A run at Pocono sure sounds fun to say the least. You are definitely going to be the most comfortable driver racing.

Trans is slowly coming along, about to finally run out and get a piece of PVC so I can use my press and push down the retaining spring to get the B1 piston out...

All parts in except f1 and f2 sprags (wanted to measure and make sure I got the right size) and snap rings to get appropriate clutch gap then back together she will go

The most challenging part is trying to stay organized enough through the time gaps when I have had to work on it...

Sorry for the thread jack Joe

I will prolly hit you up in a bit to make sure I am measuring these gaps correctly before I order the snap rings, it seems there are about 3 schools of thought on how to measure them :smash:

About to purchase some BC racing coilovers wondering what spring rates are recommended now that more people have more miles on them. Also is the SWIFT upgrade worth it?

Hotsauce55 11-22-2017 10:30 AM

Also noticed some bc websites cite the j-05 kit as front springs 7K & rear 11K seems low based on reading other threads with 16K F & 15K R

hachiroku 11-22-2017 12:51 PM

7k and 11k rear...thats weird. this isn't a mid engine car. from what i've read across numerous websites online, the swift springs have less coils and ride nicer. they in comparison have or feel like they have less of a spring rate than they're rated at. their uniformity and longevity to retain rated spring rate also is the best in the industry. additionally since they have less coils they're less likely to bind in situations where you may bottom out your suspension. swift versus standard coilover springs will return a smoother more plush ride that is more controllable through rough terrain.

that's basically a synopsis of what i've discovered online over the years. it is recommended that it is ok to go stiff with swift springs as they'll ride better at a higher spring rate rating.

Thomas Alvarez 07-25-2018 12:19 AM

Also thinking of going with bc coils, thinking of going with 18k spring rate in the front from what ive read here from user sicamg, would anyone recommend swift springs front and rear? And also what spring rate in the back?
i would do mostly street daily driving but i dont want to order with the default settings and have the front bottom out when going over bumps like theyre saying...

Im debating between these 2 options
buying from vrpspeed with default spring rates(16k front and 15k rear) and adding swift springs
or buying directly from bcracing with 18k on the front and swift springs front and rear, and idk what spring rate on the rears🤷
Any opinion and experiences are appreciated...
