Exhaust sounds like s@#*
I have E55 mufflers, no cats, resonators or anything after my headers, only 2.75" tubing till the back. No crossover either (think SLR/G)
But short of a cold start, my car sounds c*#p.
It is generally very quiet while driving, and when you get on the loud pedal, it is quite "thin" and raspy, not deep, bellowing, crackly, or any of the positives.
Why would this be? I thought with 0 restrictions, the exhaust should be VERY loud...?

Love my current setup. Quiet at low speeds, zero drone around town, very minimal drone at 2,000-2,200 at 70 mph on highway, and loud during WOT.
Granted this is an SL55 but it's the lack of a crossover and stock mufflers that give you that flappy and unpleasing tone.
(headers, high flow cats, x-pipe, stock resonators, no mufflers)

So, are you suggesting a crossover of some sort, will make a considerable difference to the sound?
Also, I was considering gutting the mufflers, but was wary as the reviews aren't always positive

The stock cans on the 55's are resonators NOT mufflers they have minimal back pressure. The cats do 90% of the muffling. Take them off and leave the cans and you will have no drone. It is however very loud at full throttle. I added a straight through style muffler where the stock secondary cats were which did the trick without any loss of performance.

Thanks! This is a 2003 SL55.
Looking at your current exhaust setup, I imagine that it has that flappy sound during wide open throttle? Put in an x-pipe where your secondary cats used to be. It will help to balance/even out the individual left/right pulses and blend them into one. You may also pick up a few horsepower from the scavenging effect that an x-pipe provides.
Thanks!
Thanks! There is zero rasp with this setup and has a beautiful unrestricted V8 sound during WOT. Need to get some video/audio from outside the car.
